Very, very quick welding question.(s)

1) My welder (over the phone) asked what the footwell area was made of. I guessed at mild steel. Am i wrong?

2) The replacement footwells like this one > LAND ROVER SERIES 2 & 3 FOOTWELL REPAIR PANEL L/H (RHD) on eBay (end time 04-Aug-10 16:42:02 BST) , are they bolted in , welded in or both ?

3) Is the area above the door checkstrap bracket an MOT fail ?

The outside upper bulkhead area is sound.

its mild steel although i noticed someone is now making stainless ones....... welded in then things like pedal boxes are bolted to them

i have never known a tester to look at a series check strap as they are not always fitted....... hint hint

bulkhead repair is a fail. footwells are mild steel and weld in..

clearly overestimating the eyesight of most MOT testers lol

Thanks guys. I did wonder whether most MOT testers would notice. The downside is that I live in proper farmer country so I guess they will know exactly what to look for.

I doubt the dodgy repair to the upper part of the bulkhead would cause a fail as long as the door is held on securely and the bulkhead does not flex excessively when the brakes are applied or the steering operated or the steering column yanked around.

Errm what about the "Corrosion within 30cm of a structural, or safety dependant item" rule for MOT testers.

Nope. it definitely doesn't do any of that. I'll get the holes in the footwells sorted and take it for an MOT and see what happens. Thankfully there is so much oil leaking out of the sump gasket all over the chassis it seems to have preserved it

The mot man will not like pop rivits if he sees them, I've had things fail with rivets in.
You can if your good weld low grade stainless too mild, 109 stainless will weld to mild with 109L mig wire, if you've done it before.
By the way stainless 'cept for the real expensive marine grade does contain ferrous metal and still rusts away.

Oops I meant 309 not 109, dunno what 109 is, probably a pushwreck frame material.
