temporary expansion tank filler cap !????

right - ahem

obviously didn't do the cap up tight enough (if at all) last time i topped up the water, and the bloody thing's come off in transit (after a week of driving around !) - cue overheating (surprise !), general malaise and a tow home...

now - can i lash something up with gaffer tape and sundry other bits and pieces that will do the job to get me 12 miles in the morning to the nearest source of a proper replacement, or is the pressure going to be too much for any jury-rigged solution to have a hope of working ?

any input very gratefully received (oh, and obviously feel free to smirk

)

well, basically youre buggered

you might find it will be ok without a cap at all, as long as it doesnt get hot enough to pressurise.

otherwise, its just a case of maintaining as much pressure as you can i suppose.

an arbritrary gaffer taping might contain a lot of it, but tbh id be trying to keep it cool enough for it not to pressure up.

It won't work.

If you absolutely MUST drive it stay below 50mph and where possible keep the revs as low as possible too.

The thermostat bypass valve opens by using the suction created by the waterpump at upwards of 1500rpm. Without the expansion cap the bypass valve on the thermostat won't open and so the coolant won't circulate properly. Either that or it will blow all of the coolant out of the header tank.

Top tip.

Expansion tanks caps cost naff all. Always wise to keep a couple at home as spares.

If I was in your position, I'd be thinking of getting a lift / taxi / bus. Likely to be cheaper than cooking your engine.
