Diff is busted

Hi,

Looking for some help and maybe someone to point me in the direction of a good independant in Glasgow / poss southside.

Car is making the most awful bumping/ grinding / squeaking noise, and bumps and bangs when coming out of reverse into 1st. The (very reliable) garage I took her to says the rear diff is wrecked and he wouldn't be able to sort it, it would need a L/R speacialist, and thinks it will be too dear, just to get rid. If only I could afford that! I also have an oil leak, which he can repair for me, but I'm holding off, and not driving until I decide. It's 1998 petrol, I've had the IRD done about 18months ago, and would like some pointers, please.

ETA meant to also say, I have the three amigos, too!

I know its an easy bandwagon to jump on - but have you checked the /vcu - cause it might be that which is wrecking your drivetrain. Not a bad idea to check it anyway.

next i would check diff mounts.

Or final drive carrier splines in gearbox.

Is it the rear diff or the ird box which I believe contains the front diff. There are a few scrappies around Glasgow southside area with freelanders in & hopefully some should still have rear diffs. IRD's might be more of a problem.
As the other guys say, it could be worth trying mondo mode to see if this helps.

It's the rear diff, I've already had a new IRD put in about 20 months ago, any idea which scrappies?

Just did a quick gurrgle search 4x4 breakers glasgow - Google Search ,you might find a phone number there ,better still get out the yellow pages.

The one in Renfrew down where the old ferry used to go from had several freelanders in about three months ago as did the one in Scott street off hawkhead road near paisley. Also I think the one in McKean street in Paisley had one in. & Abbeys in abercorn street paisley is worth a call as he has recently had a quick turnover of cars though I'm not sure if he's got any freelanders. You should also try ebay & one of the online scrappy searches like breakeryard. I got my front strut recently this way which came off a 51,000 mile car for only £30 + £14 postage - real good value.

Cheers for the help, I think I've found one nearby. The thing completely gave up the effing ghost yesterday. Will get it sotred and get rid, now.
