mark position of clamps with marker pen all round, lubricate pivot/pulley points with lithium grease or similar when you re-assemble. Don't do it until the whole mech is in place otherwise grease will appear in all kinds odd places.

good luck.

Fitted it today, very easy.. Took 1 1/2 hours... Thanks for the advice guys.. Would have been quicker but i had to change the bolt that holds the glass in place as it was to long..

Hi, just in regard to this I think I might be missing something simple. I have the regulator out and fixed up and I just need to put it back.

My question is how do you get it back in whilst keeping all the wires on the pulleys? In particular the lower pulleys?

I put mine back In and didn't get it right and things got messy...wire pulled of both pulleys at the bottom and wound into the motor housing..

I'll get it all out again, but what's the trick to get it back in easily?

Thanks

Mark

Being honest, I'm not sure whats going on!

I had a problem with the regulator which I think I have resolved. I had the whole unit out easily enough including the rails and motor etc. I laid it out as if it was inside the door and wound the wires around the pulleys etc and then attempted to refit it.

Getting the rails back in is really awkward, so by the time I had banged them about a bit I think the wires had come of the lower rails.

I'm guessing I have this all wrong.

Am I supposed to be putting the whole thing in then putting all the wires around the pulleys (very fiddly) and then tensioning the wires somehow?

Hoping you can help.

I can find lots of instructions on the site on how to remove and repair, but almost nothing on the details of refitting....

Ive done this about 4 times now and you are right its fiddly !!!!

you should be able to fully assemble off the car.

As I said if you have the cable tension right, the cables should not be able to come off the pulleys no matter what you do with it.

Did you repair kit come with cables already right length with outers, nipples etc already in place ??

well this is the embarassing bit. I actually had an unrelated problem with something else in the tailgate about a year ago which I fixed, but I think I loosened the 3 bolts holding the regulator motor and forgot to re-tighten them and eventually the tailgate window failed.

Having taken it all out, I can't see much wrong with it, no cables are snapped, and the motor is working.

What puzzled me was the white plastic tube with a spring that comes of the bottom of the motor had popped out. What is this thing? I think I worked out how to put it back together again but I'm not clear what it is for?

When I took the unit out all the wires were loose, should they be tight?

The manual I have isn't much use and this thread just says 'reverse the removal' instructions. Could you maybe do we a quick step 1...step 2....etc...?

Very much appreciate your help!

Yes, the cables should be very tight !!!!

with the whole thing on the floor, there is a cover on the back of the motor held in by 3 screws (think its 3)

remove this cover and you will see a white plastic grooved drum which the cables wind round.

the fiddly bit is you have to wind 2 cables round this - in opposite directions !! when the motor turns, one pulls it down and the other pulls it back up again

the cables have to sit in the groovesso that as one winds on the other winds off without them crossing

difficult to describe but pretty obvious how it works

I found it easier to have all the cables round the corner pulleys and all the outer sleeves in position except one.

wind the cables onto the drum then slipt the drim back onto the sprocket taking care to keep the tension .......... then pull the one unfixed outer cable into position (have to pull hard cos of the tension) Screw the cover back on and away you go ........... you will then be able to manipulate it wherever you want to get it back in

Chris

Ok, thanks I'll give that a go at the weekend (because I've got nothing better to do obviously).

Also, the white thing, I've attached an image of the thing I mean taken from another thread, is this some sort of tensioner?

How come all the instructions just say 'refit in reverse' when in fact its actually a lot more complicated than that?

Puzzled!

Pulled the top of mine....see photo.

Pretty mangled, all wires need replacing and the blue sheath has cracked, but the spindle looks a bit worn, but OK.

Does the cracked blue sheath mean I need to replace the whole lot or should I go for a a wiring kit and give it a punt ... ?

I'm in Melbourne, Australia, so it will take me a week to get the kit...unless anyone has other ideas?

Cheers
