Can anyone shed light on my problem??

I have to fix my m8s Defender, it is a hi cap with 300TDi and R380 box.
He has had a couple of instances recently where he could not get into gears due to clutch not releasing drive, this would solve itself quite quickly with no interference from us!
It would drive happily after this.
But...
Today it drove up to his house where it was parked while it was loaded up and then refused to drive at all ??
Towed back to the yard where it now sits awaiting the spanners.

Clutch feels ok, there were no bangs, crashes or rattles, it just does not drive anymore. All gears can be selected whether clutch up or down or engine running or not?

Clutch master has fluid, engine runs fine with no noises.

Thank you in advance
Alan

Has anyone been playing with the diff lock? Not sure if its the same on them all but mine has a nutral position and if not engaged properly it gives the same symptoms.
Cant see it being anything that simple... but you never know

sorry but not that
he tried it and so did I, we wobbled everything :)

With engine running, foot off the clutch and gearbox in neutral you should be able to feel if the main shaft is spinning by gently selecting a gear. If you feel nothing then you can assume there is no drive between engine and gearbox, if you do feel the shaft spinning with a slight knock or grinding when you engage a gear then the problem must be in the gearbox. I had a similar problem with a 110, bought it with no drive and it turned out that the previous owner had fitted the wrong clutch (not that this is the case with yours because it was driving before). Sounds like its going to be gearboxbox out!!

feel nothing, it all just goes in and out of any gear with no noise or clunk or anything :(

Sounds like either selector problem, or lack of drive between engine and main box.

Does it feal the same when you try to put it into gear or is the gear leaver flopping around.

Its strange for both selector forks/linkage to go at the same time - is it all gears or just some? - try 3,4, and 5 as well

I suspect its the clutch that has gone - maybe the splines have gone on the clutch plate????? - Either way I suspect you are going to be removing the gearbox and bell housing - Good luck

Gear lever does feel attached although gears are very easy to engage.
I suspect no drive to box but there are no grinding noises or anything?

I am still trying to link it to the previous problem of clutch apparently not releasing drive but it seems odd to go from one extreme to the other?

Will it drive with the diff in the locked position? check the drive shafts are not spinning in the drive flanges on the hubs.

Its not going to be a diff/half shaft issue if its going into gear without putting the clutch down.

The most likely problem here is that your clutch has gone - this will fit with it not releasing properly if the clutch release mechanism/springs have gone. The springs press the plate against the flywheel allowing drive to go onto the clutch plate. If these have worn through/self distructed it may well have presented as a problem getting it to release as the release bearing may have worn through the clutch.

I suggest you take it to a garage and get the clutch striped out / pull the bell housing off the engine and put a tourch in and have aloot whats going on - i suspect there are a load of bits of metal in the bottom of your bell housing.
