Can someone please tell me if it is best to get a td4 with a manual gearbox, or an automatic. Are there any know problems with an automatic?

Can anyone advise me please. Looking at buying a 2.0 td4, 4-5 years old, max 60,000 miles and only £8000 to spend. What problems may I occur with a vehicle this age. Will it be a love affair with my wallet and endless trips taking it back for repairs etc?
