    L Series Vibration/Booming

A few months ago I posted with a booming/vibration I get from my L Series freelander between 1700-2000rpm in 4th gear and at about 1500-1750rpm in 5th gear under full load, cant get it to happen in any other gear at any other rpm. It does not occur whilst in natural or stationery. When the...

    IRD Ratio's

The viscous must be a poor design if it cant cope with less than a 1% difference. Might have to get the early IRD as its the cheapest option and I have not got hundreds of pounds to spare at the moment. If I do get the early IRD then I will just run the car without the propshaft, no VCU fitted...

    IRD Ratio's

I have heard that IRD's are different in terms of ratio's, I believe the early vehicle's (up to 2001MY) have a drive difference (front to rear axles) of 0.8% but the later IRD's fitted from 2001MY onwards the ratio is much less, something like 0.2%. Reason I am asking is because I have the...

    L Series Vibration/Booming

No update as yet, might never have an update if all I am left with is the IRD/gearbox as I will just live with it as the cost of a new IRD or gearbox is way too much. Anyway will be the weekend before I get to look at it again. I have got quite accustomed to the boom now to be honest, the car...

    L Series Vibration/Booming

No worries, the way I look at it is that is one more component out of the way that is not at fault and now I have spare driveshafts. The problem is there in all gears, but its more prominent in 4th-5th but it is there in 1st/2nd/3rd. I am not going to get downbeat about it as that will...

    L Series Vibration/Booming

Well to be honest I was gutted but it could have been worse, i.e. if I bought an IRD or gearbox and fitted them and it didn’t stop the vibration then I would be seriously ****ed off and gutted! Driveshafts didn’t take long to replace and I am sure they will be knackered some day so...

    L Series Vibration/Booming

update, new front driveshafts fitted, still exactly the same.

    L Series Vibration/Booming

one thing i have noticed today, when the vibration booming occurs between 1500-2000rpm, if i press the clutch in (whilst still in gear normally 3rd/4th) and keep the revs at between 1500-2000rpm then the booming/vibration goes. What does this point towards, any ideas?

    L Series Vibration/Booming

Checked for backlash this morning, both driveshafts felt exactly the same, small amount of slack in both. Will try driveshafts next weekend then after that all that is left is the IRD and rear diff.

    L Series Vibration/Booming

Brilliant, thanks for the advice, will try that tomorrow as feel I wasted time today as I was hoping to find the problem. I have read all 5 pages of your thread with your L series, when you describe hammering what do you mean, like a drone/resonance through the cabin, I cant really say mine is...

    L Series Vibration/Booming

Prop back on now more squeaking brakes but booming worse again with the prop on. Got a driveshaft coming next week, spent today taking off the engine mounts and engine tie rods just in case they were knackered, looked ok, put them back on and on and obviously no different. How do I check the...

    L Series Vibration/Booming

Ok thanks for the advice matey, I will try a shaft and will let you know how I get on, will probably try the n/s one first as from reading on the forum this is one that gives the most problem. One thing I have noticed since removing the prop is that my brakes now squeal! Did this when I last...

    L Series Vibration/Booming

A lot of people are telling me its likely to be the IRD but if the IRD was knackered surely it would be noisy which it isnt? Anyway as you say it is going to be a half shaft or IRD problem so going to try a half shaft first. Will try the n/s first and if the problem is still there will put the...

Freelander Td4 - Hard starting and Emerging smoke

From my experience this maybe due to premature cylinder wear due to low quality fuel used in markets such South Africa, Central/South America etc. I would suggest a compression check. Compressions must not be below 27bar (392psi) or have 2bar (29psi) variance between cylinders. If they are...

    L Series Vibration/Booming

removed the propshaft today, the booming/vibration between 1500-2000rpm is much less noticeable with the propshaft removed but it is still there (my interior mirror still shakes!). So that rules at the prop/uj's at least, i knew it wasnt the vcu or centre bearings anyway as they had been...
