will it go in gear with the engine switched off?

it could be the selector spring (think thats what it's called) at the top of the gear box, under the cover of the centre consol, the springs can break or become weak and it stops the gear from being selected, i may be wrong so wait for a few more replies;)

it's an easy job to change the spring for the back doors but on the front doors you need to remove the door top, not too hard but a bit time consuming, and try and get a pair of locking tweezers to put the new spring in, not necessary but does make it easier.

yes as richard says the worst part is getting the water pump bolts in the right order and thats why i mentioned the cardboard trick, other than that it's an easy straight forward job that should take about 3 hours thats if you roll a fag every 5 mins go for 7 craps and drink loads of...

you do have to remove the fan but you don't go any where near the timing belt and don't need to lock the timing up at all. the water pump is at top front right of the engine as you look from the front of the car. do another search mate

use an oil filter remover strap one of the rubber ones around the pully and turn the socket, works a treat mate i thought you had to replace the p gasket when ever you removed the bolts:confused:

oh dear it's gear box oil then, but could be tranny box oh and what daft (mhm) says

that could be engine oil mate, sounds like the sump is leaking, it is common on disco's take the filler plug out the gear box and top it up, thats if it's not already full. if you do need a gear box i have one you could have. pm me if your interested

are you talking about the hole in the bottom of the bell housing where the gear box meets the engine? coz if you are thats where the wading plug goes, the gear box plug is a big 32mm bolt, the filler for thr box is a t55 key as said earlier
