    Thanks everybody! think I MAY have found the problem... With the bonnet up and revving the engine hard, you can see the air intake hose at the bottom end of the turbo (I think) collapsing. I drove it without the air filter and it was fine so swapped out the cheap filter for a posh k&n filter...

    as far as I know the only fault codes related to Air Con (Which I don't have). Yes - the failure happened same morning I found the hose hanging. I can see that the small hose coming out of the waste gate is still there and still attached to another large tube at the other end.

    the waste gate seems to operate fine if I push it in and out with some grips. I'm wondering if its something as simple as the missing jubilee clip that holds the large air tube on to the MAF sensor? I imagine an awful lot of air escapes without it but as someone who knows almost nothing about...
