The Highways Agency guys are supposed use a load cell with a display in car so that they don't exceed the allowable towing force as agreed with the manufacturer. In practise, these guys will do what it take to make the road safer.

If you can find an oil bath air filter off a Nuffield / Leyland tractor, it doesn't have the slots, but has a 3" tube on top, with a removable mushroom cap. :)

There are some good lanes in Suffolk, although last time, I left my landy at home and took the kids out in our Delica on road tyres - it was mostly very flat and sandy so 2wd was fine. We found loadsa chestnuts :) and ended up at a beach near Sizewell, and we had fun exploring WW2...

Have you tried A G Edwards at Gussage St Michael?, they're halfway between Salisbury and Blandford. Its been a few years since I've dealt with them, but they used to do mobile repairs.

I imagine that after welding and grinding youd have fragments of ally and grinding wheel everywhere.

I agree with johnlad . The crack can be very difficult to see. You could use a simple dye penetrant kit / flawfinder . The good news is , depending where the crack is, it can be successfully repaired.

How are you getting on with it now, did you find the crack??

Had exact same symptoms as the OP on my 02 TD5 150k miles this summer. With the injectors out, I could just see the crack by eye. I sent my head off to the chap who advertises on e bay... he welded it up and re machined it ..see photo below (injector #1 on rhs) (he also skimmed my exhaust...
