You'd be better off hitting the spanner with a piece of hard wood, something like a hammer shaft, it's speed you need not weight. Also try hitting the nut in the off direction with a punch and hammer.

What ratio of derv to veg oil, try going back to derv for a while and I'll bet your starting problems go away.

I hope I'm wrong but that does sound like cam belt failure, take the cover off and have a look.
