Know what you mean, have them on mine, keep meaning to use brasso on them as I remember using it to remove scratches on glass when I was in the Army.

Sounds like the lock motor is stuffed, easy job to replace, just done mine, look on e-bay about £65 FREELANDER 1 R/H FRONT DOOR LATCH / CENTRAL LOCKING MOTOR ASSEMBLY ALR9782

Fitted a new regulator to mine only yesterday 30 mins start to finish, can not be bothered to mess around with trying to fit new cables. Cost £34 off E-bay for OEM part.
