Thanks for all your input nodge. WD40 on the shaft has freed it up. At least I now know what the cause is. Fingers crossed that's all I need to do.

I did clean all in around the bearing and removed some gunk, is there a way to clean the arm and fork where it goes thru the gearbox without taking it off?

Sometimes at the side of the road its a bit difficult to do efficient search with a phone. the loom was replaced middle of last year so I expect there may be some oil left in the main wiring loom. Can these looms fail as quickly as 12 months (3000 miles ish)

Thanks Sierra, after a bit of proper searching I found out it could be the red plug on the ecu. So I took this out to clean and found some oil in the bottom end of the plug. I've cleaned it out the best I can with kitchen roll and the issue seems to have stopped. I will get some electrical...

Got the M&S lights flashing but the car is not going into limp mode. I can only select R N & D. Only had the XYZ switch replaced last year so unlikely to be that. Are there any other things it could be?

My v6 freelander went kaput before I could fit the VCU. However got a 1.8 now. The new unused VCU I have doesn’t have the damper ring on it. Will fitting this to the 1.8 cause and problems?

I'm assuming they did. I will ask in the morning. They checked the coils and all appear to be working ok and replaced the spark plugs.

Been in the garage today, new spark plugs and coils have been checked. Garage diagnostic machine is showing a misfire which would explain the lumpy idle. Even the garage mechanic is confused and wondering what the problem could be? Any more ideas guys?

Took the plenum off and nothing a miss with it. Gave it a really good shake too and nothing rattling etc.

It can't be the MAF sensor as there isn't one, but it does work out the fueling requirements from the TPS and manifolds pressure sensors so they could be out somewhat, I will order some as I think they are quite cheap. Leaking fuel injector is a possibility, I have checked them and pulled them...
