Funny you mention the oil cap cover. Mine doesn't stay on properly either and when I opened it there was oil around the tray bit. It looked quite fresh so I'm guessing someone slipped when topping it up and wasn't careful enough/mopped it all up.

Would sanding it or a wire brush be a better option. I guess heat would be fine. In fact I know somebody who took it off and powder coated it so that gets it hot enough.

I think from what I have briefly red that you will need to modify the wiring loom for the lights or something along those lines. The face lift version is much nicer and if I can source the parts cheaply enough it will be something I will consider.
