Although it may seem alot more work, the engine out is often preferred to gearbox out! Nearly every landy i have had has had to have one or the other out, and the last time (defender) after removing what must have been a billion and one bolts to get the seatbox, floor etc out the engine option...

You need to carefully remove the old cylinder, and then whilst putting gentle pressure on the rod to keep it in situ use a finger to slide the old rubber cover from the old cylinder that will most likely be lurking in the box near the end of the rod!. There is a small plastic clip keeping it in...
Remove the lining and you will most likely find a lovely shiny white metal roof that looks like it's just come out the factory. Looks far tidier than a saggy liner.
