I agree with Rockcrawler, it looks like you need the cylinder head gasket(s) changed.:( If the car has been overheating it will be worth having the head(s) checked to ensure they have not warped. You haven't mentioned which engine, TD5 or V8.

Don't jump to conclusions before you have investigated the problem. Have you checked to see if there is power to the headlamp bulbs? Have you tried new bulbs? How about the fuse?

Try bleeding the clutch fluid. Check for leaks at the slave cylinder end. If all else fails change the slave cylinder and master cylinder.

You need to check the advance mechanisms in the distributor. First check the mechanical advance by removing the distributor cap and see if you can turn the rotor arm a few degrees, it should spring back. Then check the vacuum advance, disconnect the vacuum pipe off the manifold and suck it...

What makes you think the VCU has failed? as far as I canm see all he has done is broken the rubber damper.

The only way to check is to compare with another similar model. As you said there are an awful lot of things being driven off the engine, all capable of making noise.:confused:
