No probs at all. If you have a look in the engine bay next to the drivers side wheel arch you'll see the pulley just inside a splash plate. If you can see "shinny" bits on it next to the belt or metalic dust near it - then its definately had it. It was the first major thing that went on ours...

That was my first thought, but if it was either of those I'd have thought it would be worse when putting power on? I changed the IRD and rear diff oil last year. Oil seal went on the rear diff. Been driving it this evening and all fine, no noise at all. It only seems to do it when cold.

No probs. You'll hear it when you turn left or right as your working the power steering which puts more load on the engine / alternator so makes the noise worse. It is a bit of a pricey job, but not doing it will cost loads more. Its a quite a common fault with the TD4.

Mine does exactly the same thing. (06 TD4). I've found that if I start the wipers on the fastest speed and then slowly change down to intermitent then its ok. I can hear the relay clicking just as you can. Would be interested to hear how you get on before I start taking things apart.

Does it start ok straight away afterwards? Cleaned the connection to the fuel preassure sensor on my 06 TD4 and stopped using supermarket diesel. - hasn't done it since.
