Freelander 1 TD4 Auto Gearbox Whine (I think)

It did sound like a worn bearning. Will have to wait and see if it gets worse as it doesn't happen all the time its hard to work out exactly where its coming from. I take it that IRD repairs will be pricey?

    A little help please?

No probs at all. If you have a look in the engine bay next to the drivers side wheel arch you'll see the pulley just inside a splash plate. If you can see "shinny" bits on it next to the belt or metalic dust near it - then its definately had it. It was the first major thing that went on ours...

Freelander 1 TD4 Auto Gearbox Whine (I think)

That was my first thought, but if it was either of those I'd have thought it would be worse when putting power on? I changed the IRD and rear diff oil last year. Oil seal went on the rear diff. Been driving it this evening and all fine, no noise at all. It only seems to do it when cold.

    A little help please?

No probs. You'll hear it when you turn left or right as your working the power steering which puts more load on the engine / alternator so makes the noise worse. It is a bit of a pricey job, but not doing it will cost loads more. Its a quite a common fault with the TD4.

Freelander 1 TD4 Auto Gearbox Whine (I think)

Hello all, Just a quick question about my 06 TD4 auto. Have had a search on here but can't find any other posts that show the problem I have. This week I've noticed a gearbox type whine when running down hill / engine breaking. It sounds like a series land rover gowing down hill on overrun...

    A little help please?

Hello Angela, No probs. It is a bit of a job. It needs doing though as if it s the crankshaft pulley it will cause serious engine damage if you leave it. The problem is caused by a rubber damper inside the pulley slipping against the metal outer rim where the belt goes. The noise will go when...

    best TD4 oil for service

I always use 5W-30 and change every 6 months or so. I usually get mine form Opie Oils. They usually have an offer on one decent brand or another.

    A little help please?

We've got an 06 HSE Freelander auto too, when ours did this it turned out to be the crankshaft pulley. Putting the fans on puts more load on the alternator, works the belts harder. In the end it ended up soundling like a hedge cutter. How may miles has yours done? Our pulley went at around...

Freelander 1 Intercooler Hose Sensor issue Question

Thanks for the replies. As soon as it stops raining I'll take a look. I've got the BMW crankcase breather in the shed ready to put on at the next service. I replaced the small hose at the same time as this one, it was Britpart too and lasted six months. If its had it I'll replace it. As the leak...

Freelander 1 Intercooler Hose Sensor issue Question

About 18 months ago I replaced the intercooler to manifold hose on my 06 TD4. Its the one with the sensor on it. I've noticed over the last few weeks that a bit of oil is coming out around the sensor. Not loads - but its got slightly worse recently. The hose isn't a genuine LR one, I think its a...

Freelander 1 Freelanders are the best land rover because ....

Strangely enough I filled it up at the Texaco garage at the top of Telegraph Hill just outside Exeter and we drove to just west of Harrogate. Stayed between 60-70 mph all the way with only a bit of slow traffic on the M1. We took the route you have described. We left the fuel wasting and brake...

Freelander 1 Freelanders are the best land rover because ....

I was suprised as well. Maybe the pump was bust at the garage. Filled it to the top in Devon before we left. When we arrived we stopped to fill it up again so we didn't have to bother whlist we were there, came to £32.47. I kept the receipt in the service book as as proof. We'd just fitted 4...

Freelander 1 Freelanders are the best land rover because ....

They really aren't too bad are they? When we first got our 06 TD4 I was a bit worried as I'd read a few horror stories on here. However, after two years we are really pleased with it. Show me another landy that I could use for towing a boat, delivering fish, driving long distance, park in tiny...

    Hazard light switch

Nothing wrong with manual folding mirrors - less to go wrong! I think Nodge's idea makes sense. I didn't try the hazzards when the mirrors didn't work as it was p***ing down when they stopped working so fixed them in a rush. However, what stopped them working was the near side one getting...

    Hazard light switch

It could be worth checking. I had a chat with a mechanic mate about this today and the only thing we could think of is that changing the fuse broke another circuit which then did something in the ECU (or some other kind of electric control box) which reset everything, just like what happens when...

    Freelander 1 Diesel TD4 sounds Dieselier !

We always try to put decent fuel in our 06 TD4 but sometimes have to fill up at Morrisons. Every time we do it runs lumpy from cold and puffs white smoke when starting. The supermarket stuff lasts nowhere near as long. Filled up with Texaco premium the other day and went from Devon to North...

    Hazard light switch

Just a quick update on this in case anyone is still interested. After leaving the replacement switch that I bought in place even though it didn't light up I just forgot about it and got used to it. However, I recently replaced fuse F10 as my power fold mirrors weren't working and for some reason...

    Whiper problems.

Mine does exactly the same thing. (06 TD4). I've found that if I start the wipers on the fastest speed and then slowly change down to intermitent then its ok. I can hear the relay clicking just as you can. Would be interested to hear how you get on before I start taking things apart.

    Freelander 1 starting problems

Does it start ok straight away afterwards? Cleaned the connection to the fuel preassure sensor on my 06 TD4 and stopped using supermarket diesel. - hasn't done it since.

Freelander 1 TD4 Rear Drive Shaft Play

Spot on thanks. As soon as it stops raining I'll get under it and see how the front mount looks. Might be next year at this rate!
