    Cracked Head??

So you reckon it's better to get a second-hand head rather than check/re-surface the existing one then?

    Cracked Head??

I replaced the head gasket a while back, it had blown between the bore and the oil-way on #4 (common thing apparently?) and I had huge clouds of white smoke coming out of the oil filler neck! Changed the gasket and double-checked the torque. It was fine for a few hundred miles, but I am...

    Cracked Head??

Well, after 'sorting' out the loss of coolant (or thinking I had, silly me!), when moving house recently, driving the Disco to the new place with caravan on the back, got just under half-way - around 12 miles - and the temp gauge started climbing again! Pulled over, lost around 1 1/2 gallons of...

New auxiliary belt starting to break down

I replaced the Aux belt on our Disco 1 300TDi around 300 miles ago, and today I noticed that it looked like it was starting to break down! It looks like an F1 tyre after a good lap!! almost looks like it's de-laminating on the smooth edge and feels slightly sticky to the touch. She seems to...

    Losing coolant again!

Well, I thought I had sorted it out after replacing the expansion bottle and cap. After a couple of shortish runs, the temp was rock solid, and the level in the expansion bottle dropped by around 1/2" or so once the water was up to temp then returned to the fill line when cool. But after a...

    Losing coolant again!

Thanks for the replies guys. I have replaced both expansion bottle and cap as there is definitely staining around the seam of the old bottle. I bled the system by filling the radiator through the top cap, replaced the cap then filled the thermostat housing until the expansion bottle was...

    Losing coolant again!

Hi all. After several attempts at sorting my overheating Disco 9 (see http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/overheated-300tdi-264599-2.html), I thought I had sorted it out. I eventually replaced the thermostat and water pump, bled in several different ways as advised on here and she seemed to be...

    Overheated 300TDi

SO I think I need to test out the thermostat, and if it works I guess I'll back flush the radiator and try again.

    Overheated 300TDi

I have been squeezing the hoses to try and move the air, and also bled via radiator cap first then thermo housing plug and still no joy on getting the radiator warm. I always thought the thermostat would open once the water gets to 'normal' so as the engine starts to get hotter, the water would...

    Overheated 300TDi

Well, replaced the pump got everything back together. Bled the system as best I could. The heater seems to work fine once the engine warms up, and the temp gauge sits around 1/3, but I am not sure the thermostat is opening. The large pipe from the pump to the radiator/expansion bottle gets hot...

    Overheated 300TDi

Don't worry I will. After spending 3 1/2hrs getting what was left of one of the long bolts out of the bracket/housing I am most definitely replacing all the bolts and applying liberal amounts of copper grease to them all. It was not so much dissimilar metal corrosion as fusion of steel and...

    Overheated 300TDi

Thanks for all the replies guys :) Finally managed to get the alternator/power steering pump/water pump casting off after much effing and blinding. Luckily after a little judicious anger with the blow torch and a pair of mole grips I managed to get what was left of the sheared stud out...

    Overheated 300TDi

OK, bear with me for the scenario: 2 weeks ago the stud for the serpentine belt tensioner snapped and the belt came adrift. I got the truck home, replaced the stud and the belt as a matter of course. Belt was really tight to get on (right one chosen from measurements and VIN) but I assumed it...

    serpentine belt tensioner bolt sheared

After a bit of advice please guys. Just on my way home when I heard a short clatter from the engine bay, thought nothing of it then the battery light came on and the steering went into muscle-man mode! I assumed that the belt had snapped so drove home and on popping the lid found the...

    Lift pump foobarred!

Evening all. Had an annoying ticking from the Disco 1 (300TDi) for a good while now, tried to locate it using all the known methods, but couldn't really find out what it was. Changed the fuel filter tonight as it was way overdue, and when I came to prime up the lift pump again I was pumping the...

    Heater Blowing Cold

I had a similar problem a long time ago, and eventually found I had a pinhole leak in the core plug at the rear of the head. I can only assume it was letting water out and also possibly air in? Probably nothing to do with your problem, but just goes to show that a leak can be a bu99er to find!

    Body mount replacement

While I'm waiting for the replacement Flexi plate for my 300Tdi, I have been looking into the front sill body mounts, they had an advisory last MOT for light corrosion. Well the nearside is a lot more than 'light corrosion'! Problem is, I have undone all 5 body mount bolts as advised on here and...
