I thought by 56 plate you have an lp pump in the off-side rear wheel arch and the hp pump under the bonnet. I thought all you have in the tank is the pick up

Where's the noise coming from? Do you mean the squeaking noise from the steering column? Lots of them do it, especially when cold. If you search the forum you will find lots of people asking about, but very few explanations or cures

Did you drive it without the hose, or just rev it up on the drive? If it was just revving on the drive then the engine didn't have any load on it. If you want to see black smoke then take the hose off, hitch up a heavy caravan and tow it up a hill

Is it worth trying to get the part from a breaker?

There is no electric fuel pump on a 300TDI so you wont hear a fuel pump priming when you turn the ignition on. It could be that your bodging with the spider has messed things up and the fuel stop solenoid isn't opening when you turn the ignition on.

It's supposed to stop the crap getting up between the inner and outer wings and so slow down corrosion.

you need to plug a fault code reader in then come back and tell us what faults are logged. Did you replace the pump and sensor before or after the problem? If before, then how long before?

When did you last change the air filter? If the search recommended above doesn't include anything about "lift pump" in the results then you could try a search for that in either the Disco or Defender sections

Lots of people can't spell waxoyl, I bet "waxoil", "wax oil" and " wax oyl" would all get plenty of results.
