What model is it? Is there a squelch dial? If so then turn this down as it cuts out interference for when you are not receiving anything. If you have someone nearby with a fitted working one then it is best to have them around so you can test properly.

I might be wrong but on picture 11 I think I can see a hole in the outrigger. I am looking on a phone so could be wrong. If it was me I would find a tidier standard one.

If its just to charge a phone then take a fused live from the ignition. If you are going to use it for different things that may draw more amps then take a fused feed from the battery. You could put a relay on it so that it becomes live only with the ignition.

They are handy if your swivels start to leak as they stop it from dripping on to the disc. I have kept mine on for that reason.
