    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

I haven’t started her up yet ( due to the issues with the stater motor etc. So I think I will drain the lot (resident fuel) out of the tank as you’ve suggested - best to be safe than sorry just for a few litres of ‘fuel’. The lift pump you refer to, is that the manual pump to prime the fuel...

    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

Thank you for the information, very much appreciated. I’ve created a few ‘wander leads ‘ as you’ve suggested , with croc clips and bulb and 7m of solid core wire too. ( also ordered a voltage checker / power probe type thing from Amazon but still waiting for that to arrive). The new battery I’ve...

    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

Where can I check for a faulty earth - somewhere on the engine block ? I looked at the starter motor ( with a mirror) and all wires appear to be in place, though I haven’t tried to ‘short ‘ them with a screwdriver or put 12v to the starter motor externally to get it working. It’s located in a...

    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

Yes the diesel looks fine, when I put on a new fuel filter I used the lift pump to prime the new filter and the fuel looked fine. When I connected the battery and turned the key, the fuel gage indicated over half a tank, so there’s a bit in there ! I’ll have another look on the fuel tank, tbh...

    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

Jeez…that’s sounds terrifying ! Definitely don’t want that to happen….thanks for the information, really appreciated ! I’m going to drain the tank and see what comes out… but I’m still looking for a drain plug on my 90. Did Landrover ever put in ‘non’ drainable fuel tanks ?

    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

Jeez… I had no idea … bugs growing in the diesel, you wouldn’t have thought it possible… are we just buying a water mixture at the pump ? And the cost of it too these days is an absolute disgrace ! Daylight robbery to say the least ! What are the key identifiers with ‘diesel bug’ ? Are they a...

    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

Just a note, I’m having difficulty locating the ‘spade’ connection to the fuel injection pump to disconnect the solenoid. There’s a screw type connector - I’m not familiar with the workings of the fuel injection pump. If anyone could advise I’d be very grateful. If I’ve got this right - I have...

    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

‘Diesel bug’ ??? That’s something new to me, what is it ? Is is a chemical reaction or something biological - living creatures ??? How would I know if I have the problem? Is it possible to drain the tank ? Is there a drain plug on a 1994 200Tdi 90 fuel tank ? I’ve had a look and couldn’t see...

    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

Yes I’ve replaced the fuel filter. I first drained the contents from the bottom (drain part on the filter) and collected what looked like a bit of water which then turned in to diesel. The diesel looked OK but I’m not an expert. I put fresh diesel into the new filter when I replaced the old one...

    howto: 200tdi injector refurb

I have a Defender 200Tdi 1994 90k miles, but has sat in my garage for the past 20 years. Should I be looking at the injectors as part of the ‘restoration’ ? I’ve had the vehicle since new, but has sat for the past 20 years in my garage. I’m in the process of getting the old girl back on the...

    Defender 200Tdi 90 1993 - 20yr old fuel in tank

Yes - it was suggested to me by a ‘colleague’ to squirt oil through the injector holes, but I wasn’t sure about that. Your suggestion makes sense to get some lubricant around the engine before starting. Just got to locate the injection pump solenoid:) - I’m a beginner and learning from the from...

Defender 200Tdi with no alarms or anti-theft - recommendations ?

Hello Everyone, I have a 1994 200Tdi 90 with no alarms or anti theft devices - built in an age before such devices were ‘needed’ or built into the vehicle. Defender 200Tdi 1994 coolant

JFI - When I contacted Landrover regarding the coolant for the 200Tdi, they did say that for the 300Tdi engine, it was now ‘safe’ to use the Pink OAT, as the formula had since changed over the years from the original OAT coolant. Hence why there are contradictory opinions about OAT coolant on...

    Defender 200Tdi 1994 coolant

Thank you everyone for the replies, much appreciated. As the opinions vary I called Landrover themselves and was informed that due to ‘other’ metals (copper, brass etc) being used in the 200Tdi engine, then blue coolant was the way to go. So I’m off to Halfords to exchange the coolant from pink...
