    Nasty gear shift

Hi, I removed the cover (2 screws) slackened the four bolts, shoved the gear lever into 3rd, tightened the bolts. Its now a joy to change gear. Manythanks. I pondered some more about the transfer gear lever, but still of the same opinion. I don't know if its relevent, but the rubber...

    Nasty gear shift

Hi Andy, I have taken a shufti at the transfer gear lever. No way can I see a pivot for movong the lever sideways to lock the centre diff. Nor vdoes it seem obvious for the lever at the back of gearbox/top of transfer box to rotate about a N-S centreline. Photo of transfer lever below...

    Would you bother?

Hi, Its nothing special, but a useful basis for a galv chassis rebuild. Not being a purist, I would get an estimate on the value of the registration. Then balance that value against the cost of a rebuild, remembering that the reg ain't wurt nuttin until you get an MOT. Realistically, it...

    Nasty gear shift

Thanks Andy, So how does the little lever move then? There seems to be no provision for moving it sideways, although the knob shows picures to indicate it does. I'll try for a photo, post tomorrow. 602

    The girl that I married.....

Hi, No! £9,000 was the cost to REPAIR it. The only panel not damaged was the passenger door. Even the NSF wing was damaged by the bonnet moving across. As I said, we settled for £650. 602

    The girl that I married.....

Hi, She parked the SAAB in front of my Disco, got out, saw her wheel was on the kerb. Put key back in ignition to release gear lever (necessary to put locked SAAB into neutral) shoved lever into neutral, dropped handbrake, tried to push car off kerb. It wouldn't budge. So she climbed in...

    The girl that I married.....

Hi, Just thought you might like to see how my wife treats me......... £9,000 of damage to her car. Note position of drivers door £3,000 of damage to my Disco. Which she bought me four months earlier. And the van was a write off too. Note position of OSF front wheel. All she did was...

    Nasty gear shift

H Andy, Ahaaa! I am moistening my tongue, so prepare your boots for cleaning. That looks like my thingy, only most of the mechanism is hidden by the cup I mentioned. The two cross-point screws fit into the two tapped holes in your photo. The springs are nothing like what I imagined. My...

    Nasty gear shift

Hi Andy, Bias plate? There is a sort of cover/cup over the bottom of the gearlever, apparently held onto top of gear box by two screws (cross point. probably 6mm). This cover carries the reverse lamp switch, and something with a black plunger tucked under the tunnel......possibly the reverse...

    Disco heater bodge?

Hi, With all your encouragement, I pulled the console, etc, managed to get at the heater controls, though still not a lot of room. Problem was the left lever, fresh air control. The plastic clip had broken up, so the lever was not moving the push-rod to open the vent. Push rod needed a lot...

    Nasty gear shift

Hi, While I have my centre console off my 1993 Disco...... The geabox is from a 300TDi, or so I'm told. The gearlever side movement is between two springy rods, possibly a horse-shoe spring. These rods restrict the side movement, but allow further movement if forced, ie to select reverse or...

    Disco heater bodge?

Hi, While I am delving under the console....... The PO had fitted a 300TDi gearbox. I find gear selection to be very hit and miss. The detents across box to prevent selection of reverse, and premature selection of 5th do not seem to line up with where the lever ought to be. So I often go...

    Disco heater bodge?

Hi, I took a peer around last evening. Nothing obvious to remove easily. But my radio sits near vertically in the centre CONSOLE which includes the parcel box between the seats, and the window switches. I think I must have an earlier model (pre-1994) and the console has to come out...

    Disco heater bodge?

Hi, What do you mean by centre section of dash? NOT the instrument panel I assume? I didn't notice anything in the middle that looked easy to pull.....I'll look again tomorrow. 602

    Disco heater bodge?

Hi, I have a 1993 Disco van. The heater fan blows like crazy, but not onto the screen. The contol levers feel floppy, so I assume a cable has come adrift. I can live without heat, but I do like to see where I am going. I don't really want to pull out all the interior. Is there anywhere...

    Can I tow my trailer?

Hi, Group B allows you to tow up to 750kg MAM with ANYTHING, provided the car manufacturer hasn't put a lower limit .....which he probably has, unless car is quite old. The trailer will amost certainly have MAM more that half the kerbweight of the tow car, so will require brakes. For all...
