    SII Front Panel in SIII

Hi, I think the headlamps moved to the wings several years before it became mandatory. But I think all S3 were made after the cut of date. Note the DIP beams must be closer to side of vehicle than MAIN beams. So you will not be able to drive on radiator lights only. Does that make sense...

    Smoking Series 3

Hi, My old 1965 LWB Safari made smoke like a Polaris missile emerging from the Pacific. I managed to devise a way of timing the camshaft without using a DTI, so fitted a new timing chain. I don't know if the old one was worn, or if a PO had already fitted one, but fitted it wrong...

    positive earth vehicles

Hi, If you are fitting an alternator, DO NOT GO POSITIVE EARTH. I think your ammeter will read the wrong way round, just swap the terminals over. I'm guessing that you don't have a radio or other music maker ..... but if you do, look for a change over switch. If it hasn't got one, list...

    engine swap in france

Hi, In France, I'm told that you must not put a diesel engine into a petrol car ..... for reasons that don't apply to Land Rovers. 602

    Series Bulkhead

Hi, Obvious bit is that the dash panel is different. S3 is mounted in front of steering wheel, and top is padded. Back of S2 is easier to access. Almost as obvious is that the windscreen hinges are different, so you will need screen from S3. I have vague memories of the steering column...

Series 2a brakes. Or current lack of..

Hi, In your situation, I would attempt to bleed from the middle of the system. Might work, might not. Get mate to depress brake pedal and hold. Slacken brake light switch until fluid starts to dribble out. When it stops dribbling, tighten switch, pedal up, pedal down, slacken switch, ad...

    no trailer lights

Hi, Can you clarify the question, please? I think you are saying that you have NO trailer lights. AND You are saying that your L/H indicator isn't working. But is that the Landy indicator or the trailer indicator? And does THIS problem only occur when you connect the trailer plug? You...

    no trailer lights

Hi Trailer electic problems ALWAYS involve the earth return wire. 602

    help me with my brakes!!!!

Hi, Split systems are the work of the devil. Twin leading shoe front brakes are impossible to bleed. (unless twin systems have a seperate hose to each cylinder .... I've never looked). The outlet/bled nipple is on centre line of wheel cylinder, so there is trapped air above it...

    B****cks... Gearbox !!!!

Hi, My 1960 S2 with TD engine. Rattly gearbox, particularly foot off in 3rd. One day it started to whine, very loud. Within a mile, it suddenly lost all drive. Engage gear, lift clutch, howl of protest from gearbox. I managed to drive home using top gear only, starting off in LO...

    B****cks... Gearbox !!!!

Hi, Don't have a TDi engine do you? Remove rear prop. try driving in 4WD. Still got the noise? Gearbox, broken lay-shaft? Gone quiet? Well at least you can drive it until you fix it. Probably best to pull rear half shafts as well. My back axle caught fire in Wiltshire, on way to...

Series front brakes different to rear

Hi Did you say wider shoes on front? There were some Landies that had wide shoes (all round?). These were 6-pot Safaris, maybe 1-tonners, maybe Stage Ones. I'm guessing here, but shoes may be 3" wide. I understand that parts are getting difficult, IE - expensive. It may be worth looking...

    Fitting an LT77 gearbox into a Series 3 with a 200Tdi engine

Hi, Do a Google for Ashcroft Transmissions, somewhere in their Miscellaneous section, 5-speed conversion for Series, but I think the one shown has the long Defender clutch housing. Circa £1000, but I think that is outright purchase .... not sure if new or recon + modified. Note, you front...

Dead man walking How do you get oil of drive?

Hi, Pile cement (dust) onto the oil, let it soak it up like blotting paper. The longer you leave it, the better, but don't let it get wet. Scrubbing brush and Swarfega, hose it off? 602

    Just fitted Ashcroft transfer kit

I have a gearbox that works well but is noisey in 1st,2nd and 3rd but is quiet in 4th. Hi, First, second, and third, (and reverse) all involve the layshaft. Top gear does not .... it just joins two shafts together - they run in line with each other. My first suggestion is that you check...

    Hoisting engines

Hi, There is a small plate bolted to the back of the engine, can't remember if its on the block or the head. It might be intended as a lifting bracket for the engine alone, in conjunction with a bracket at the front. Whatever, it seems to be at the centre of gravity, both front/rear and...

Hi, Stage One Granny Rover? Stage One Sherpa? 602

    15J Sherpa engine

Hi, The P3/P4 engines were normally 6 pots, so would have same gear box front end as S1 Land Rovers, as did the Rover 60. Rover 80? Now there is a thought. At worst, you might have to change gearbox to LR clutch cover. Hmmmm. 602

    15J Sherpa engine

Hi, er ...... if a Sherpa engine fits a Landy gearbox .......will a TDi engine fit into a Sherpa? I'll get my coat. 602
