How I fixed my TD5 ECU (maybe worth doing for preventative reasons too)

I received my broken ECU back today, but sadly this is not how it behaves when I give it a try. Everything works normally, apart from it will crank and crank, but just won't take (I'm sure fuel is not being injected). Cheers for all of the pointers though. Any other ideas, or is it time to move...

How I fixed my TD5 ECU (maybe worth doing for preventative reasons too)

I've not been able to check the fault codes for the second time it failed, so they could well be different this time. Sounds like I'd be wise to borrow a Nanocom sooner rather than later then

Are you referring to the ones circled in the attached photo? I don't have the skills needed to test or replace these myself, but a few people at my work are able to do this kind of thing. Cheers

Ah, OK. A little bit of confusion on my part there. I should be able to borrow a Nanocom and transfer the map over from my working ECU, so hopefully that will all be OK then. Cheers

I'm going to try and source one of these NNN types to have as a spare. If I get one from a Discovery, is there any way to get the temp guage to work the right way round for a Defender? Cheers

    Defender TD5 ECU failure !!!!

I've a failed ECU that's currently with ECU Testing for repair. Fortunately I have a spare to keep me going, but I really hope they can fix the original, for the reasons mentioned above. It would be amazing if someone could reverse engineer the ECU and put replacement boards up for sale, as it...

Thanks. Do you know which of the NNN models will work too? I know to avoid the ones from Discovery Automatics, but that's all I know. Cheers

How I fixed my TD5 ECU (maybe worth doing for preventative reasons too)

Bit of an update (sadly) The 'repaired' ECU failed today on the way home - same fault as before, I believe. Fortunately I had a spare with me, so back up and running in no time. Must have got over 1000 miles out it before it went, but went it did. If I can't get it to work again, I think I'll...

    Defender TD5 starter motor removal/replacement

It may well be easier to replace the solenoid without removing the starter motor first

I'm happy to report that it is still working fine :)

    ECU Problems :(

Yep, I certainly was fortunate that it was the caps and not any of the surface mount components. I feel pretty confident that this is a permanent fix for me, but let's see what the next few thousand miles brings...

    ECU Problems :(

I popped a post together to describe what I did, in case anyone else wants to give it a try... https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/how-i-fixed-my-td5-ecu-maybe-worth-doing-for-preventative-reasons-too.378202/ It's now in the truck for a long term test (along with the spare, just in case)

How I fixed my TD5 ECU (maybe worth doing for preventative reasons too)

May 22 update - my ECU stopped working, so there must be something wrong with it beyond the big caps ***Just because this worked for me, doesn't mean it will for you. This could wreck your ECU permanently*** Thanks to eprothe for the inspiration -...

    ECU Problems :(

It works! I made the mistake of reusing the original bolts that held the caps in place, even though they weren't in the cleanest condition. New bolts fitted, and it fires up like a dream. Now for a few proper road tests before calling this a win.

    Hot plugging the TD5 ECU

Does anyone know if it's ok to swap ECUs without having to disconnect the battery every time? Cheers

TD5 not cranking, but I get a click

I did it on the vehicle. The access wasn't bad, and if it came to it, I reckon I could refurb the solenoid without removing the starter motor.

    ECU Problems :(

I thought that was the case, but sometimes you gotta clutch at those straws! Does anyone have any ideas on what I should check next? Cheers

    ECU Problems :(

I managed to find almost perfect replacement capacitors, with screw terminals, and after easing the oversized one in, I gave my repaired ECU a test today... ...it didn't work. Same no-start, non-firing issue as before. Does anyone know if I need to hook a nanocom up and clear the fault codes...

TD5 not cranking, but I get a click

All sorted. The contacts for the main 12v feed were as grubby as anything. Cleaned them up, and all is good again. A little smear of vaseline will hopefully prevent that happening again anytime soon. I also opened up the solenoid to check its condition, and it was pretty much as good as new, so...

TD5 not cranking, but I get a click

I'm going to try and do it without removing the starter from the engine. Apparently it's doable...
