Just got this problem on my '96 Tdi this morning. Spoke to my man in the know and he confirmed it is the matrix without even seeing it. He is getting me a bottle of coolant system sealer to try as he reckons that usually does the trick pretty successfully. He said not to use the stuff available...

Thanks Roger, I had wondered that about the later ones with all their extra electrics etc! I bought my '96 TDi in January with 114k on the clock and have covered 5,000 trouble free miles since.
