OK, no better ideas so I used the self tappers etc. Worked well. Fitted the new plate and springs a couple of days ago. What a difference! I now have a precise positive gearchange! The fact my centre console no longer rattles since re-fitting it is an added bonus :)

Throttle pot? I guess it needs to be plugged into the diagnostic gizmo. A similar problem on my old 300Tdi was easier to remedy...... adjust the throttle cable.

Finally got round to stripping the console etc out last night. My plate has cracked as suspected. Just ordered a new one at £3.60+VAT and new springs, one at 80p and the other at 75p?!?!?! How much of a pain is that rubber moulding to get out! 13 rivets to be drilled out. I'm putting it back...

Both my 300Tdi Discos have done this. The last one started as you say after new pads being fitted. My local specialist told me it's caliper wear and he made up some shims which cured the problem.

On my 300 Tdi I've had a few occassions where I've had trouble finding 3rd and 4th gear, usually ending up going from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th. I've noticed that the gearstick does not centralise properly and when in neutral is over to the left. This is obviously the reason for the troubles...

I had the timing belt on my last 300 done by a local specialist. Cost about £130 + VAT. Price wise I paid £2900 for my R plate but it had 92k on it and it's a basic model.

My question was are late series-1 3 doors rare. I know there's loads of older ones around, afterall they only made it as a 3 door to start with. I was there when the first 2 cars came down the production line, both white with blue interiors.

Yes, even the right colour, but on an R plate. I've seen a few older ones up to about M plates but no late ones.

It's a 300 Tdi. It was registered 1997 on an R plate so was registered well before the Series 2 came out.

I've had my R plate 3 door Disco for about 3 months now (after having to sell my mint Y plate Td5 to finance a house :( ) . Since buying it I haven't seen another late 3 door on the road. Is it that rare?

Both my 300 Tdi's have done this. It can be slightly alarming but as long as the catch and safety catch are working it's not a problem.
