If it aint the battery or starter motor, then the only other thing is a bad connection. Check all of them to the starter and all earth straps. If any terminals are getting hot, then thats the one.

Wouldnt worry too much about either "fault". I used to have one where the further you went, the more fuel you had. Thought it was going to save me a fortune, but unfortunately it was only wired up the wrong way round :(

A paper filter type box off a 2.5 diesel should fit.
