Advice sought on Landy project for newbie...

You won't get a fully restored one for £2500...they tend to be around 5-10k. You will pick up a tidy one though, that may need a little tinkering to finish. So why not just tinker and finish the £500 one, and then sell for a profit and use that you buy a better one - or use as a hack, whilst...

    any taboo's

You can grease the springs, by opening them up with a bottle jack, and running a small amount of grease between the leaves - stops any squeaking if they get dry. Don't put too much on, you don't want to attract grit! Keep her yellow! The S3's seem to be crawling up in value now, and ex-gpo's...

    dreaded MOT Series II

I thought it would! Well done!:D Sounded like most bases were covered - and lets' face it, not much to test on these oldies!

Please watch cctv footage of theives eyeing up how they can get my 90

There is a system that the police use in covert capture cars called 'Toad-eye' or similar which gives all round vision and reports to a black box such as those used in aircraft. Problem with that is, it assumes you get the vehicle back! A good camera and post should deter most - there are...

    Chassis protection

Only tip I can give after you have used the protective coatings, is to paint the outside of the chassis a light colour.....if anything does start coming through, you will see it before it gets too far!

Advice sought on Landy project for newbie...

If the conversion has been done that long ago, I would just carry on. It will always be a bitsa, so just enjoy it as a toy. The 2.5 is a good engine, and as it has an unleaded head on it, is ideal for a cheap lpg kit (available very cheap for 4 pots) core plugs are simple enough - do check...

    Help

tdi seems to be a popular changeover - though this needs some adjustments - have a browse on those threads. That should give you circa 35mpg, but a very noisy trip. If you are just pottering locally, just leave it as it is! diy costs are around £600. you will need fuel lines and tank.

Welcome! The only way I have ever managed to wind up a cornishman is by saying 'I'm having pasty and chips tonight'.......try it! It is funny...

    alternative to welding

Have a chat with your local car accessory supplier - they usually have cards around for mobile welders if you can't find a member close to you. If you see another series in your area - knock on the door and ask if they know anyone - they probably know how to themselves! Friend made. You really...

    dreaded MOT Series II

Sounds like you should be fine! Check lights work, none faded, no splits in tyres - think you should go straight through! Not alot to test on S2!! Good Luck!

    Water water everywhere

It's a landy! Light rain outside=downpour inside!! Usually gets trapped in the gutter inside, and dribbles over your lap, or pours into the tub as you drive. Series drivers are well versed in filling up at a petrol station, whilst getting looks from other drivers who think you have wet...

    dreaded MOT Series II

Just check ball joints and chassis for rust. I scraped my chassis down before the MOT, and was glad I did, as I found a small crack in one section, and small hole in another! Zipped those up and went straight through!

    No sump gasket I'm told

What about paddocks or similar? I know what you mean, riles me when people cannot be bothered. I had it with the merc recently. Motor factors had the part - I checked a few days prior. Went to buy it, and he said they didn't stock it and walked off! Just as well, as merc turned out to be...

    Learning to weld & equipment

You should have seen me when I started welding again. I was a panel beater for years, changed career and never touched a welder for 8 years.....first time back on the welder was erm...interesting! Comes back after a while! I was weird when I first started welding, as I took to gas...

CO2 GAS BOTTLE (welding) on eBay (end time 09-Jan-11 17:46:21 GMT) Gives you an idea - adapters are available from most tool places. Argon mix gives a cleaner weld, but is much more expensive!

    Learning to weld & equipment

If he gets the hang of it without gas, he will be a demon with it turned on!:D He may get away with it if there are no draughts - it only keeps the weld pool clean. Never be perfect, but if he gets the general hang of it without.....

    just bought this winch

You do need to be wary of unbranded winches - the kingpin is the usual problem area. That lets go and so does the winch. They usually just swarf up and lock the motor. Let us know how you get one with it! You never know, it could turn out to be a good one. I don't want to dampen your spirit -...

    MOT Pre-Check...

I am fussy, so try to keep on top with maintenance. Anything that looks iffy gets replaced. I just had the mot done (straight through) but a month before this, I did go through everything - including scraping down, checking and repainting the chassis. Good idea, as I did find a hole and a small...
