Have you tried changing the battery and then re-syncing the fob?

Normally the heater element is behind the glass and not part of it. If you can carefully remove the broken glass from the fitting you can replace it with a stick on one as MHM says. Replacements are available from most good motor factors. I did this two or three times on a VW Golf I used to own...
