not yet (I still don't own a tape measure!). I plan to do this at the weekend though, after replacing the track rod, drag link etc...

well generally I agree with you, but I do trust the guys at my local place in particular... they don't seem to understand the numbers fully, but they have done a good job for me in the past with previous vehicles :) The problem is, they charge £30. My favourite garage charges £66.

    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

no idea why it's so out of line to be honest... i do know of a very good local garage with all the kit, skills and knowledge, but they're £66 per hour inc. VAT. I just can't afford it. I also have an old school friend who is a manager in a wheel alignment/tyre fitting place and is actually very...

    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

They did not adjust the front because the track rod and drag link had completely siezed. No amount of heat or hammering would free them up, hence why I have bought new ones which I will fit this weekend. The reason they did not adjust the back axle was that it is not adjustable. It does need...

I agree :) Anyway... does anyone know about wheel alignment and can help with the below?

    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

very true... but there is a hole in the bottom of my diff guards for that reason, and they get clogged up and blocked very quickly indeed!

    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

good point... I hadn't considered which way round to fit the damper! I think i'll mount mine whichever way keeps the dirt cover open to the bottom (so stuff doesn't collect in it). This presumably means the body will be down at the steering end. I would rather do it the same way as yours, but...

ah, ok... i'll steer clear of that then... or make sure I only prod it with a non-conductive item!!

    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

good... i cannot think of a single other question, so as long as I can get 6 nuts undone and 4 ball joints freed up, all should be good! Oh, and I worked out today I'm going to have to extend the left-hand trailing arm on the rear axle by 11mm in order to straighten out the rear wheels (one...

    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

Thanks for the reply! I will leave the crappy plastic cover on the damper, of course, and I won't disconnect the battery. Why the hell would Haynes tell you to disconnect the battery for a drag link replacement?!? that seems utterly ridiculous! lol Anyway, I will set the drag link to 924mm...

So... apart from the steering damper cover looking really cheap and nasty, I have a few questions... Thanks to Mr. Noisy for the procedure for changing this all over. It looks so damn simple even without a procedure to be honest, but Mr. Noisy's procedure will be followed! I've had a look...

OK, here it is... Doesn't yours look so much better quality? Mine looks like a rock would hit it and snap it off!

    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

well that does look like the same steering damper that I have got, but your rubber boot looks much, much better than mine!! Yours looks like a nice corrugated rubber type arrangement. Mine is a flimsy plastic cylinder with the end cut off so it slides over the thick part of the damper...

    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

Right! I've worked out that to get the rear axle back inline I will need to lengthen the left-hand trailing arm by 11mm!!! What the hell happened to need the trailing arm shimming that amount?!?:D The diagonal measurements from front-left to rear-right and vice versa differ by about...

    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

Two questions... (the steering parts have arrived btw)... First of all, I assume I am supposed to leave the flimsy-looking blue plastic cover in place on the steering damper to keep all the rubbish off the "actuator", right? The standard damper has a cover over it, but the cover on the new...

What have you done to your Landie today.

    vibration damper

tempted to remove mine now too, when I replace the tie rods and steering damper... although someone in my thread did say "it's there for a reason"... has anyone here removed theirs, but still does lots of road miles in the same vehicle with it removed?

right - to hell with the standard. I don't need the heavy duty aspect of the HD stuff, but the other aspects are tempting enough. I will order the HD items in a few minutes! Mr. Noisy - I assume I can switch to the Terrafirma bars and steering damper, but still keep the snail thingy, right...
