Grinding whirring noise when in gear??

Yeah, I'm just looking for one now in case it has to be swapped :( It appears it can be done without removing the gearbox which is good for keeping the cost down as it would be stupid not to put a clutch in etc if it had to come off.

Grinding whirring noise when in gear??

Still no further with this however today i was able to lift her on a ramp and drive the wheels. Whilst i couldn't particularly go very quick the noise appeared to be from the transfer box rather than the gearbox. Out of curiosity i engaged the diff lock ( with a 10mm spanner from underneath) and...

Grinding whirring noise when in gear??

I don't believe the gear its in makes any difference but will test this in the morning to confirm. It seems to be when the engine and gearbox are directly linked that the noise occurs. The second i "separate" the two with either the clutch or even pulling it out of gear without the clutch it...

Grinding whirring noise when in gear??

Whilst there are some vibrations and rattles, neither would be the main words I'd use to describe the issue, does this rule out the DMF? would the thrust bearing cause the whirring/rubbing noise? Thanks.

Grinding whirring noise when in gear??

Props seem fine but i will re-inspect in the morning. DM Flywheel has popped up a few times whilst searching the forum for answers, is there a way of confirming/ruling this out?. She feels like gear changes are less smooth than they were but that might just be me! I have all kinds running...

Grinding whirring noise when in gear??

The handbrake feels fine and appears to be fully releasing. As for winding up the transmission i dont think so. Something to add though is that she was driven (short necessary journeys only) with the diff lock engaged whilst the front propshaft was removed around 3-4 weeks ago for refurb. Thanks.

Grinding whirring noise when in gear??

The props are both fine, the front UJ's and centre bearing of the double cardan are all around three weeks old and the rear appears fine also. The noise its self wont stop whilst coasting/not accelerating but if i drop it out of gear it stops instantly. Thanks.

Grinding whirring noise when in gear??

Hi all, As the title suggests really, I'm getting a grinding/rubbing/whirring noise whilst driving. It happens in any and all gears, but stops if i take the lever out of gear or depress the clutch. It's been happening for about a week now and is not particularly getting any worse except for...

Discovery 2 front propshaft UJ's all the same?

Little update just in case anybody has a similar problem in future and comes across this thread.... The UJ's are indeed all the same (despite 3 different "specialists" being adamant that the rear of the front shaft can't be replaced). The centre bearing was a problem and fell apart, likely due...

Discovery 2 front propshaft UJ's all the same?

Thanks for the replies guys. I knew the guy in the shop was wrong! I'll order some tomorrow. What's the thoughts on removing the prop and engaging the diff lock temporarily until they turn up? I've read the three amigos will rear their ugly heads again if I do this? Not a problem really, the...

Discovery 2 front propshaft UJ's all the same?

Thanks David, that's the guide i will use to do the job, but are all three UJ's the same part no.? I believe, and a lot of things I'm reading (including the link)would suggest they are. Whilst they're relatively cheap and i could just try them, its not the money i don't want to waste, its the...

Discovery 2 front propshaft UJ's all the same?

Hi all, Little question I'm hoping will be an easy one for somebody in the know?? I need to replace one of the rear UJ's on the front prop shaft of my Discovery TD5 maunal 1999. The UJ's are available on the net and are listed as " can be used on either end of the front or back prop shaft" My...

Philips or Alpine 99 TD5 Disco

Evening all, I recently replaced the stereo in my 1999 Discovery TD5 GS ( it was a crappy aftermarket unit) with a Sony one. I'm looking to interface the steering wheel volume control, if it actually works that is. Ive found what may be the correct item to do this but it depends on what head...

    ACE removed

Thanks guys, Ive had a good look around and it does have anti roll bars that seem to be none ACE (no hydraulics etc). Im going to get it checked out to confirm that they are all as they should be. Could it be the steering? i have no leaks or anything but its very loose feeling from about 10...

my tyres are BF Goodrich All Terrain 235 70 16 and as of yesterday have 35 psi in. They had about 22 in and to be honest felt better before. I guessed the 35 but will look into that now, im guessing the 35 is closer to the recommended than 22 though?

I have no warning lights or noises but im guessing that's easily done? on the drivers side chassis i have i think 3 cables with plugs on that are just hanging with nothing to plug in to, no pumps or pipes that i could see. Ill take a look at the the roll bars in the light tomorrow but i'm not...
