    E.P additives in gear oil

James, i thought there was no yellow metals in either the transfer box or diffs? The official Land Rover Defender manual recommends both gl4&5 for the transfer box:

    Thermostat

Possibly the thermostat failed in the closed position causing the engine to get hot, the previous owner then removed it. Best replace, as it will help the engine to heat up to the optimum operating temperature (also supply heat more rapidly to the heater matrix)

    Heavy Duty Sills

Thanks for the link - will give them a call.

    Heavy Duty Sills

It's a good option, but i'd rather go with a DIY bolt on solution. Has anyone fitted the Bearmach sills to their 90/110 - if so, any chance of a picture of the mounting?

    Heavy Duty Sills

Looking to replace the sills on my 110 with heavy duty ones but I would like to retain the original folding side steps (for my very young kids). Mantec advertise that their heavy duty jackable sills are compatible with the folding side steps; problem is the price is approx £260. Bearmach ba...

    Anti-freeze

Could be - I've read various 2nd hand horror stories about the use of red in older cars (see dedicated thread on difflock forum) but my rad & cooling/heating system has had red OAT antifreeze pumped around it for the last ten years & hasn't sprung a leak; I'm yet to find anyone who has...

    New battery time

Installing a battery with greater cca will not damage anything. Go for a min of 750 cca; Optima red tops are a quality long life battery: Optima Red Top Batteries - Optima Batteries When you take into consideration their extended life, they probably cost no more than a budget battery.

    Anti-freeze

Use an ethylene glycol based anti-freeze (containing no methanol). There is an opinion that using the red/pink long life antifreeze in a 200/300tdi is a big no no. I have not found this to be the case. My Defender 300tdi has covered the last 100,000 miles using red (organic acid type) without...

    Recommend oils

Before I changed to Evo, the wife found the gear changes very difficult especially 2nd to 3rd & the selection of reverse. She couldn't believe the transformation with Evo in the gearbox - now just slips into 3rd & no more double D reverse selections.

    Recommend oils

If you want to transform your R380 gearbox use this stuff: 4x4 Store Very expensive but worth every penny. Shouldn't have to be changed for a couple of years (just top up when required).

Help required 300 TDI not starting !!

The No. of holes denote the thickness of the gasket (1 hole gaskets being the thinnest upto no hole being the thickest). If the head requires a skim, a thicker gasket will be required to compensate for the lost metal (3 hole gaskets seem to be popular).

The Big Debate - Britpart or S**tpart?

I always try to avoid unmarked parts; when it comes time to replace the rear prop, I think I'll give Bailey Morris a try (same price as Britpart / GKN).

The Big Debate - Britpart or S**tpart?

James, in your experience are the Bailey Morris units superior to the GKN?

The Big Debate - Britpart or S**tpart?

I did wonder if it was manufactured by GKN for Britpart - paid £160(inc delivery). I've decided I'm not going to accept it as a substitution. Isn't 1 year a rather short live span for a UJ? The GKN's fitted by the previous owner on my 110 are 4 years old (approx 50,000 miles). Update: Just...

The Big Debate - Britpart or S**tpart?

What's the consensus (have I been prop-shafted?) Ordered a new GKN "EXTREME WIDE ANGLE FRONT PROPSHAFT" from an Ebay seller; what actually turned up on my door was a Britpart wide angle prop shaft. Should I fit the Britpart shaft or demand the GKN item that I ordered?

Who has tweaked their fuel pump to produce better driving characteristics???

Water bubbler - is this a water/methanol injection system? If so, how do you find it affects the performance?

Water running in from roof both sides!

I had similar leaks that appeared to come from the front corners of the roof & also assumed it was a leaky sunroof. Turned out that water was finding its way past the tops of the door frame seals (both sides) as shown below. I used Loctite 595 to plug any gaps around the rubber door frame seals...
