On series Land Rovers the chassis number was stamped on the front dumb iron, one of the first places to rot out, on the ones I owned anyway, so the majority had no visible ID on the chassis after a few years, that could make life complicated these days.
My understanding you end up with a Q plate if you mix and match parts from several vehicles and lose the original ID by failing the points system, The chassis would still have to have a unique ID (specifically the chassis number)not one that was being used on another vehicle. If you buy a...
Don't think you can Q plate a used chassis if the original ID is being used on a vehicle that has been rechassied.with a new one. I suppose you might be able to if the original vehicle no longer existed for some reason. Otherwise you would have two vehicles on the road with the same ID (if not...
I am genuinely interested to know what "Legitimate" uses a chassis without it's ID has? If the ID has been transferred to a new chassis the only use I can think of is in an unregistered off roader. Even then if the authorities knew they would probably insist it was scrapped because even without...
You can rechassis your Land Rover with a NEW galv chassis, what you can't do is rechassis your Land Rover with a second hand chassis without using that chassis ID, that's called ringing and is against the law.
It has no legitimate uses outside an untaxed, unregistered off roader. OP you might be the legal owner but without ID/V5 it is scrap. you might not like my insinuation but if you sell this and it goes back on the road without its original ID you ARE contributing to criminal activity. If you...
I had my series 111 nicked, the police told me 7 had been stolen within a 5 mile radius in one night. This was back in 1990 though, so Landies getting nicked is not a new thing, fit security, be vigilant, try not to get paranoid.
To be honest I'm more concerned about disturbing the top swivel bush but the mod gets round the alternative problem of bleeding the brakes, so win win.
The job is straight forward as long as you have all the bits and bobs as outlined by others. I have one suggestion for a little mod that makes things easier in future. To remove the calipers off you have to disturb the upper swivel bearing bolts to free the solid/flexible brake pipe bracket...
The brake fluid trick will work. If the box is knackered it will only fix it for a while, you have nothing to lose, you are still going to need a rebuilt box one way or another. On the other hand if it's just the output shaft seal weeping a little it will fix it potentially for years. I...
I agree entirely about Britpart. We should remember that Britpart are only middlemen, they don't actually make anything, they source parts from many different suppliers and there cost/quality reflects this. I wouldn't buy a bearing from then but am happy to buy a door seal or a spring.
Be careful about buying a welder without enough power. I had a Clarke 100e for many years and to do chassis work needed careful weldprep and good technique. I bought that welder before I got into Land Rovers and was repairing normal cars. When the 100e died I got a 150amp mig and It makes life...
I've used Paddocks for over 20 years and never had a problem with them as a company. My only problem is their stock contains too many Britpart items and it's not always easy to sort out which supplier you will be supplied with when ordering. I like to know who made the bits before I part with my...
If you are going to get a set of bolt removers and I think you should if you work on your land Rover :) Get the Irwin ones they are the best I've used, you might be disappointed if you try and save money by buying cheap.
Copper washers can be used many times if you anneal them each oil change. (heat the washer to cherry red and quench it in water) You only need to change them when they are visibly damaged.
