WAY-HEY at long last the saga is at an end,the son and i took the diff out yesterday and found 1 tooth whitch looked as if the case hardening had come off hence the tapping noise,no teeth missing a per the first one ,we must have been unlucky with the s/h diff. I,LL run this s/h diff for a while...

built down to a PRICE is the most likely explanation,R R allways had a high reputation but when the p38 was being developed money was tight every body expected electronics my understanding was that RR electronics where done on the cheap hence all the problems lets face it most motors on the road...

YOUR spot on there wammers the majority of vechicles we drive would not be on the road if not for us,people with money would not be messing about with diffs,e a s ,head gaskets ect the motors would be cashed in for a new un they get routine servicing +occasional breakdown after that its cashed...

STRANGE you should mention morris minor rear axles thats what my elva was fitted with when the halfshaft bent mind you it was supposed to have a e39a side valve +3 speed box,i fitted mine with a mg magnette engine and box then later an m g b +od gearbox so it gotta a bit of stick until swapped...

eyup datatek the first one had teeth missing of the crown wheel 3 if i remember rightly,this one SOUNDS like it has a tooth missing but we havent stripped it down yet,the origonal one howled like a banshee,we cleaned the diff out before we put anything back ,like wammers said we must be unlucky...

we ve been in the garage this pm the lad and i ,checked the viscous coupling the wheel was hard to turn but turn it did ,we turned it one full turn so it looks like the vc is ok,thats good news but it still leaves the question of whats knacking the rear diffs up im going to put a new diff in...
