Classic Landrover - which one to buy

30 years for low tax but 79 or earlier to avoid the need for mot.

Classic Landrover - which one to buy

2 or 4 door, long or short. Petrol is fine as it will be doing a low mileage. I have been told that they "rust like **** which is a bit off putting. But if I kept it, say for three years, I would be saving £2000 just on tax & mot's ! So rust is the first concern followed by ease of DIY...

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

That might be easier said than done here in the West of Ireland ! Apart from the obvious dropped liner is there any other likely area where exhaust gas can enter the coolant ? I might get one of these as they appear to be essential equipment for any petrol Freelander owners

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

    Yes coolant is being pumped.

Classic Landrover - which one to buy

I now live in Ireland & I am considering getting a classic for everyday light use. It has to be 1979 or earlier to avail of €50 tax & no dreaded NCT (MOT). I am a reasonable home mechanic, I have to be as I drive a Freelander 1.8, but I live by the sea so corrosion is a big factor. I used...

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

Liners were good 3 months ago - could be knackered now :p I have just had the engine running for over an hour & bubbles are still coming out of the heater bleed screw & out of the top of the rad via the bleed into the bottle. But I don't know if they are air, steam or combustion gasses...

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

I have a strange set of symptoms. I recently changed the head gasket on my 1.8 as part of a head rebuild (snapped cambelt). Everything has been fine for 3 months. Now the engine overheats within the first couple of miles & the bottom hose stayed cold. I checked the, new type inline stat &...

    K series Performance/Reliability mods

Thanks but I can't see how that would effect the timing belt.

    K series Performance/Reliability mods

I have got to know my engine well for all the wrong reasons. But at least it is reasonably easy to work on. Having said that my latest problem is causing a awful lot of grief: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f57/timing-belt-tracking-touching-rear-cover-174454.html It is so frustrating to have...

Timing Belt Tracking & touching rear cover.

I am now tearing my hair out ! The cam sprockets & tensioner seem well aligned & I have taken off, checked & refitted the crank sprocket. But when I turn the engine I can see that the cambelt is tracking towards the back - I have just removed the rear cover to see how far the belt will travel...

Timing Belt Tracking & touching rear cover.

The problem is that I am still not sure if the belt is too far back or the cover too far forward. I have seen photos on the forums where the cambelt is in the same position as mine. It does seem odd that there is no way of tracking the belt.

Timing Belt Tracking & touching rear cover.

Started the engine after a head rebuild & everything was fine but after a while I could hear a worrying noise ! The timing belt has tracked towards the rear (towards the head) & it is touching the rear cover about half way between the crankshaft & the exhaust cam sprocket. I can't see any...

Old head gasket residue - how to remove ?

Any ideas how to remove the grey deposit/residue left on the head from a new type MLS gasket ? I am guessing that it's the stuff that glues the shim to the head. It's being done as part of a valve replacement due to a slipped belt so no need to skim the head.

    Replacement Catalytic Converters 1.8

Does anyone have experience of using non Landrover CC's ?. I failed an emissions test & the mechanic fitted a Cat made by Eurocat Catalytic Converters from European Exhaust&Catalyst Ltd. My emissions went up !. I have been told that the original CC was over engineered - maybe that's why they...

    Emission problems with 1.8

Well enough of a tw@t to of assumed that you guys could manage a little advice with a smile. I never knew that owning a Landy precluded one from having a sense of humour.

    Emission problems with 1.8

Well he was sharp enough to go a good job on the head & he is about to fit a set of suspension bushes !. But it is tempting to wind you up as you get so airated !. One day I might tell you how I "cured" my 3 Amigos so that it would pass the test.

But Chromium has said that it stands a better chance with the filter out. Has your agreement to agree come to an end ?

    Emission problems with 1.8

So are we suggesting that I take the new filter out for the test ?. Most service items were changed during the head change 3 months ago.
