Sounds like you have a fuel leak to me, it doing about the same as mine is with its fuel leak, mines on the return line so aslong as the engine is running its still pushing petrol round causing a low pressure leak.

I've got both 300 V8 ES and TD5 XS. They are night and day really. If you can afford to buy a D2 then get one of them, IMO a much better alrounder.

This recently stopped me swapping my TD5 Discovery for a 110 as I am the same with my licence. I didn't see any point in taking the extra seats out of the back as it would defeat the point of having a 110 CSW. I am still looking in to which bits and who to see about upgrading my licence.

Best thing about auto is hill starts as it holds itself ready for moving. Down hill you can either put in one of the drive gears and it holds there or if its a newer auto select hill decent.
