Petrol engine manifolds bolt - can't tighten it

Hi Oxides Thanks for the reply. Don't think I've stripped the stud, as I did everything up gradually and not too tight - I have stripped threads in the past and it didn't feel like this. In fact, the bolt felt tight until I started the engine, then it worked loose. You may still be right, but I...

Petrol engine manifolds bolt - can't tighten it

Hi Have just finished fitting a new exhaust manifold to a 2286cc petrol engine. The manifolds, as you probably know, are both on the same side. There are 5 bolts on the 'top row' - one at each end and one in the middle for the exhaust manifold and two for the inlet manifold. Below...

Back after ages with another old Land Rover

Hello all Haven't been in here for a while. Have tried living without an old Land Rover but only managed a couple of years. Latest acquisition is a 1978 109 FFR Ex-military radio vehicle. Seems to have been looked after ok - at least in its civilian life someone has spent a few quid on it...

series 3 diesel - i left the ignition on!

Think I may have found the problem. Current flowing for too long...wire heated up, melted insulation, short circuit. Approximately where the alternator wires pass by the bottom of the vertical oil filler pipe. Hope it didn't grill anything in the alternator. Am not exactly sure what the...

series 3 diesel - i left the ignition on!

Thanks for the answers so far. As the problem happened as a result of me leaving current flowing through a circuit, as opposed to a contact problem which occurred whilst driving, I am going to check the diode in the alternator or one of its wires, wherever it's hiding.

series 3 diesel - i left the ignition on!

1977 S3 109" 2286cc diesel. Arrived home, pulled the stop lever to cut the motor, but then forgot to switch off with the key. Came back to it a couple of hours later - the green and red lights were on, as is normal when you switch the ignition on, and when i turned the key to restart, the...

110 Diesel Alternator wiring help PLEASE

Hi My recently acquired ex-military 110 Diesel (1988) developed a charging fault after about 1200 miles. I have obtained a new alternator BUT there are 4 different areas to which wires seem to need to be attached. The previous alternator was connected via the triple spade terminal (with...

S3 front hub nuts - undoing

Thank you both for your advice. All sorted now. Problem was the lock washer which wasn't 100% straight; amazing how a small protrusion can prevent a nut from turning, but I suppose that's the point of a lock washer eh? All the best

    S3 jumps out of gear

Hi LandRover people Have recently acquired an S3 88" diesel. It runs well but has jumped out of second and fourth gear a few times, not during acceleration but either whilst tickling the throttle in fourth gear or on slow (low box) descent with engine braking. Any ideas? It might not...
