Have you tried to get to the lock by removing the rear door card ? That might at least give you a chance of checking the wiring.

Option two is to replace it, most car interior trimmers will do it, or sell you the fabric if your brave enough to do it yourself. The fabric is backed by foam, and at the age yours is any attempt to scrub it will probably cause the foam to break up and separate from the fabric...not pretty...
