You *can* refurbish a pump at home....if you have time/patience/ingenuity. You need to rig up some kit to test it, which is probably the hardest part. I've attached some pages from the pump rebuild manual. CAV DPAs were used in other applications as well, and kits used to be available online...

Having just done mine, genuine LR ones are not much better than you describe. Quite a rough bit of steel, but the threads did appear to be straight. It's probably a mild steel punching. Got mine from Dunsfold, about £8 each I think.

Agree with complete rewire. Did that to mine and it was quicker than working out where to join in. I used thin wall and multi core cables where ever I could, gives you twice the protection against insulation being worn thru. Also put harness in trunking, it's neat and adds more protection.

You can buy proper British made springs from either GB springs or Jones springs. I think GB will do paras as well. I just bought a set from Jones, good service, bushes fitted, look the bussiness. But, they are a bit slow....5 week lead time for mine. They were recomended to me by Dunsfold LR...
