Great thanks. I was hoping it would be simple :) I will take the starter out and give it a good clean I think and maybe replace the solenoid to be sure. Do the solenoids just unscrew or are they bolted on?
It is possible that it is the stop solenoid as yes the EDC does control that. Its always been a slow starter but only recently this problem has occurred so don't think its air in the fuel.
The starter will turn as soon as you turn the key as it should but when you would normally let go of the key once its fired it stalls, you have to keep to starter running with the engine until its ready to go on its own after throttle input.
Hi All, I have a starter problem on my 300TDi. The starter engages properly to start the engine but you have to keep the starter running for a second or so before the engine will run on its own, any ideas please?

OK, I will start with the leak off pipes then and go from there as this seems quite a common issue! If that doesn't solve it I will start checking further pipes and the sediment bowl!
So I can rule out air in the system then as it will start fine once initially started, I will change the leak off pipes then in case they're letting fuel to drain back.
Wouldn't it be a pain to start even when not cold if it was getting air in the system or sometimes run lumpy when air gets to the injectors? Once its been started it will start all day first crank?
OK I can check that, if its not, what could be the cause?
Yes, replaced them all a short while ago.
No I haven't looked there, something else to check :)
