It could be the inhibitor switch stopping you from starting the vehicle. Manual myself but I have heard of this happening.

Have you checked the high low gear stick is in engaged?

Change things like the clutch, timing belt and aux belts it will save a host of jobs later on that will be more difficult with the engine in situation.
