It's a diesel vapour/air mixture inside the cylinder under extreme pressure.

bit harsh! Anyway, diesel won't burn in an enclosed space

Lets agree to disagree. I think the nuts with the taper and the shoulder are ok, you don't. The garage obviously think they're ok too as it wasn't mentioned at the MOT.

I stand corrected, it must be due to braking force them as surely if the wheel is rotating anticlockwise it would tighten a RHT. But obviously it would loosen under braking.

alloy nuts on steel wheels??? - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

True but you seem to have some strange ideas as to how it became a three wheeled disco. I know I'm right when I say these nuts can be used on either alloy or steel wheels. Maybe some alloy wheel nuts just have the shoulder and no taper but these have both.

Wheel hasn't as such, it was just attached to the bit that fell off.

    Word of warning!

Yes!! And the alloy nuts still have the same angle so that they clamp the steel wheel! Whether they use that angle to clamp the alloy wheels or not is totally irrelevant!

    reverse lights

Don't think they can be adjusted on these boxes can they? I know they can't on the R380, a new switch isn't much

Just had another think about this and it's not the side more likely to undo via inertia, it's always the right hand side.... that's why many vans and ALL lorries have left hand threads on the offside wheel nuts.
  18. bigrichsri

    Word of warning!

Please explain, as both types of nuts (alloy and steel) have exactly the same angle and therefore contact the wheel exactly the same!

Sorry, air gun does 1000Nm at 10bar, currently only running at 8bar so probably half that.... even so, recommended torque is only 130Nm so they were plenty tight enough!
