A voltmeter on the electrical connections would be a good check too. Then depeding on what the reading is, tracing the fault in the lamp unit itself/bulb holder etc or tracing the wiring upwards. If the body mounted lights work, then there isn't that much length of cable to check.

Twin axle trailer? If so, I can't see any reason to alter the rear springs on your Disco, since they made them able to tow 3.5t from the factory in standard spec, and the twin axle configuration of the trailer should mean hardly any noseweight (relatively speaking), even when braking etc...

Forgot to ask, how big is the caravan (and how much does it weigh)? Running 2 cars is not cheaper than suffering the loss of fuel economy, so if you need the Disco to tow a heavy caravan, then Disco it is....what's the current towcar? Any other towing involved?
