I got the V5 for my 98 300tdi 110 CSW changed to read "Estate" but it is still classed as non compliant by tfl on account of having 12 seats and they're telling me its a mini bus!!! .......The only fact in all of this is that tfl/LEZ ain't got an effing clue :mad:

I can do a long journey, stop for 2 minutes and on restart it puffs out the same puff of black smoke as it did when it was stone cold. I believe its just caused by overfuelling on the start up cycle. Nothing to worry about.

Only if it was manufactured as a station wagon have you got any chance of getting exemption, panel vans will be classed as commercial, you can't just add seats and windows either as it has to have been made as a station wagon in the factory. The chassis number verifies this. Even then though...

Use a clothes peg to hold the cable pull in the open position inside the vehicle, then you can go round and lift the bonnet just remember to remove the peg when you want to close it. I keep the peg in the ash tray.

IMHO the thing with the older Defenders is the nuts and bolts engineering, they are basically simplistic machines but that does have a lot of obvious advantages. As soon as they start to try and update it, hi-tec engine, fancy dash etc it kinda loses the plot a bit, it doesn't make sense so...

I don't think its a rational thinking thing really coz there are lots of other vehicles out there that are similar to a Disco and they all do the car thing well, but nothing is like a Defender. Its kinda going in a different direction. If you have to ask why a Defender you probably won't get it...
