    4WD question

If you've got an 88" then it might be worth considering converting to a stronger Salisbury rear axle as found on 109" SIII Land-Rovers. It is a bit of a fiddle fitting them though - it's not a simple bolt on conversion.

    4WD question

Running in 4wd on a hard surface would not put the main gearbox or much of the transfer box under any extra strain, only the shafts and dog clutch connecting the front output flange to the rear output flange. I've never heard of those breaking. It will put a strain on all your halshafts...

    gearbox

The gearboxes have serial numbers on them. The suffix letter of the serial number can be used to identify the gearbox type. I think that most parts are still available. I must find some time to get my ambulance on the road.

    Lightweight engine swap????

200 tdi is the way to go. You could easily spend as much money making a 2 1/4 diesel engine run as well as those engines can, as you would buying a good used 200 tdi. 200Tdis are great engines and will make a series Land-Rover much more useable, whereas the 2 1/4 diesel engines run pretty...

land rover series 3 rev counter

In fourth gear the main box has a ratio of 1:1. The transfer box in high range has a ratio of 1.148:1. Standard diffs are 4.7:1. So If your engine is doing 3000rpm then in top gear high ratio, the road wheels will be turning at 3000/(1.148*4.7) RPM = 556 RPM. Your rim diameter is 16" =...

    exhaust

I've heard that the 2 1/4 diesel exhaust manifold will bolt onty the 2.5 diesel cylinder head for a 90/110. Is yours non turbo? You may already have one of these manifolds in place with a standard 2 1/4 diesel exhaust system. If you post up some photos we'll be able to tell you what you've got.

Rebuilding an Series 3, advice needed.

The steel door tops are ****. If the budget will stretch that far get some ex army alloy framed door tops or rocky mountain ones. Otherwise fill them with waxoil.

    Broken front half shaft S111

Engage 4 wheel drive and put it in gear, jack up one side of the front axle so that only one wheel is off the ground. Try turning the wheel by hand. If you can turn it a full turn then something is wrong. If you can turn the wheel more than 1 turn then watch the front propshaft while you're...

    Locking Hubs query ?

Lock them in when the gearbox is in 4 wheel drive. It's OK to leave them locked in when in 2 wheel drive on the road, but to achieve the fuel saving benefit, they should be unlocked when in 2 wheel drive.

    Cutting out when hot

I suspect the problem is caused by dirt in the carb, but it would probably be worth checking electrics first: Spark plugs, clean or replace points, now condensor, check condition of distributor cap. Check that there is a good fuel supply to the carb by removing the fuel inlet pipe and pumping...

    Playing Out

I know what you mean. Coilers are undeniably very capable off road, but I think they make life far too easy. To do trails which more modern Land-Rovers can tackle in a safe, controlled manner, a Series Land-Rover will often have have to be floored with much banging and crashing, bouncing...

    No point in going back...because I can't!

If you go for a replacement box I'd undo the drain plugs and look for broken teeth, bearings and other debris, before handing over any cash. Series gearboxes are often in a bad state. If you've got the means of removing the box, somewhere to work on it, a bit of patience and some mechanical...

    Strata this weekend

I'll have a think about that - I'll let you know tomorrow evening. I'd guess it would be hard enough trying to even drive the roads up there at the moment. I reckon Soar y Mynydd would be practically impossible, it was hard enough week last tuesday.

    No point in going back...because I can't!

Does the box lock up in reverse or is there just no drive in reverse? Definitely check the selector mechanism if there is no drive. I suppose it could be a selector fork problem. It's likely to be a problem with the reverse idler, which will mean taking the gearbox out. Unless you want to...
