It took few days for mine to ease up ....spraying and wriggling the arm with a pair of grips. There's no reverse synchro on these gearboxes...best to give it a couple of seconds after stopping completely and selecting reverse or it will just grind... if that's what is happening.

There's this to double check what they have said Freelander 1 EKA Code Online or Telephone 01379 669375. If they cannot provide he EKA they shouldn't charge...or maybe they have had this before and know what to do Disclaimer ...It may or may not be cheaper to go to a dealer for this...

Yep ...they still visit the crab pool every year ...but they don't seem to get any older :)

Also spray the clutch fork arm with plenty of 3 in 1 ...the lever that the slave piston operates Spray this while someone else operates the clutch pedal for you.

Check the spade connector first on the thin wire (live feed to the starter motor solenoid) - sometimes it loses connection and just needs a push in....happened to me a couple of times. Don't know about any connection to the headlights being on though.

If you go the postman route ...tell them exactly where you are with your new key etc ...if they foresee a problem then they should let you know. A bloke at work lost his only Disco key and fob ...cost him £600 + for them to come and pick up his car, provide a new key and program the fob...

Check for broken switch wires under the gear lever gaiter ..do a search, there are a few more causes...good luck.

If it comes down to the switch ...try working the springy plunger with your fingers - it might just be sticking in with grime, a bit of a clean might do it.

On mine I found the yellow HDC bulb had been taken out ...I put one in and it stayed lit constantly ...I just took it to my local garage and he plugged in his 'snap on' diagnostic, he was puzzled and said there are no codes stored but then he just did a reset anyway and the light has stayed off...
