    Battery Replacement and Window Setting

You need to turn the ignition on then off, remove the key and disconnect the battery within 14 seconds or thereabouts otherwise your alarm will go off. mikeateves

    P38 starting problems

Have you checked the battery? These are exactly the symptoms I've had with a virtually flat battery.

    P38 manual gearbox oil

Hi, I've always used MTF so far as that was what the manual says but according to the service engineer at LR the gearchange is better if you use ATF. He commented that MTF is semi-synthetic and supposed to be better but in reality ATF is the better oil. Regards, mikeateves

    P38 manual gearbox oil

To answer my own question (and for anyone else that's interested) just spoken to the local LR garage and they recommend using ATF in the main gearbox rather than MTF.

    P38 manual gearbox oil

Hi, I need to change the oil in my '96 P38a manual gearbox and so far have used MTF as this is what LR use - so I'm told. It has been suggested to me by an independent LR garage to use ATF (i.e. same fluid as for transfer box) in the gearbox - 'its better for the bearings' I was told. Does...

    P38 Remote Receiver Problems

I ran my P38 with the RF aerial disconnected for a while. This seemed to have two consequences: 1. As mentioned you have to hold the key close to the rear o/s quarted to get the remote to work. 2. (Not seen this mentioned B4) but I found if I didn't start the engine within about 1minute the...

    Front Fog Lights

The answer may depend on whether or not you have a manual gearbox or auto. My P38 diesel is a manual and the gearbox cooler is in front of the main radiator (below the intercooler). As you say both apertures in the valence for foglights have blanks in them so I can't see that fitting foglights...

how to bleed a slave cylinder properly...

Hi, What vehicle are we talking about here? If its a P38 I seem to recall the manual says something about turning on the ignition when bleeding the slave cylinder. I'll try and remember to look up the instructions. If its not a P38 I can't help you. mikeateves

    Tyre wear

Hi, Thanks for the replies. If one wheel is more out of alignment than the other I can't see how you correct for this as the only adjustment is on the drag link and this 'ought' to affect both wheels equally. It could be a camber issue, strange thing is I had the same thing on a classic and...

    Tyre wear

Hi, Following on from a previous thread about tracking my P38 diesel seems to wear the front tyres on the inside (I guess it needs the tracking looked at) what puzzles me is that the driver's side wheel is significantly more worn on it's inside edge than the passenger side. Does this suggest...

I presume you have extended the height adjusting lever out to its full length? It's pretty near impossible to lower the seat down again if you don't. Hope your sitting comfortably. :D mikeateves

    P38 Alarm, glowplugs etc.

Hi, I have an early P38 DT. Following on from an earlier thread about the P38 alarm system, this must have its own battery (cos it goes off if you disconnect the main battery). Is there a recommended period after which this battery needs replacing? If so, what does it involve? How...

    P38 mileage

Hi, Does anyone have a list of the various locations that the mileage is stored on a P38? I wouldn't want to replace a component and suddenly find my mileage has doubled! Thanks in advance, mikeateves

not starting - new battery advice

Hi, I'm not an expert but instinct says buy the heaviest duty battery you can. I have a manual 2.5DT and only get a couple of goes at starting before the battery is too flat. As for disconnecting the battery just remember you need to turn the ignition on then off, remove the key from the...

    suspension air bags

Hi, I was interested in the responses suggesting changing the suspension air bags was easy as I'll probably need to do this in the near future on my P38. A couple of questions arise though: 1. What about releasing the pressure in the air suspension system first? 2. Do you need to have the...

    O/s Tyre inner edge scrubbed!!!

Hi, I had the same thing on my N reg P38: OS front tyre warn off on the inside edge. I swapped the front and back tyres over to get abit more wear out of them and had the tracking checked and adjusted. The front tyres seem to be wearing evenly now. Its still a mystery to me though why only the...

    P38 Diesel Fuel Filter

Hi, Thanks for the replies. I might have know it was straightforward. Its just that when I replaced the filter (first one I'd done) I tried twisting the plastic cap but it didn't want to move - that's my excuse for appearing incompetent! M.

    P38 Diesel Fuel Filter

Hi,The workshop manual states that you should check for water in the diesel fuel filter and drain it out. Has anyone ever done this and found water in the fuel filter? I.e. is this necessary? If it is, how do you do it? There is a plastic cap on the bottom of the fuel filter but I haven't worked...
