    P38A DT Manual transmission noise/play

I have a '96 P38A DT manual and have noticed a slightly rattle-like noise when accelerating around the 1600rpm mark, not really noticeable in 5th. Poking about underneath I noticed that if a push on the front propshaft at the transfer box end there is a bit of play. The play is not in the...

    Viscous fan

Hi, Finally got around to replacing the thermostat, turned out to be a fairly straightforward job and now the temp gauge is getting up to where it should be :). Being a muppet I used tap water to dilute the coolant to top up the cooling system. Is this likely to be a problem?

    Viscous fan

Appreciate all the replies. Judging by Wammer's description of the fan I'm pretty sure this isn't the problem. Now, for removing the fan I see on that well known auction site you can get a spanner or spanner & hub holding tool set. Should I get the set or just the spanner? Anyone used the set...

    Viscous fan

I wouldn't want to cook my head (although others may ). If I take the replace the stat will I lose much coolant? Will I have problems with trapped air when refilling?

    Viscous fan

One small snag, mine doesn't have air con. I'll try taking the viscous fan off and see if that makes a difference, shouldn't need it anyway with this weather.

Thanks for the quick replies. I can see a bit of newspaper abuse is in order!

    Viscous fan

Hi, I think my P38A diesel is running a bit cool (temp gauge never gets much off the blue zone). Before going down the route of replacing the stat I wondered if it is the viscous fan. How easily should the fan turn when the engine is cold? I expected it to rotate pretty freely but even giving it...

    Removing manual gearbox gear knob

Thanks for the replies. Turns out brute force was what was needed. There was some thread lock stuff securing the knob, should be easier to get off next time!

    Removing manual gearbox gear knob

Where should I find this grub screw? There isn't one at the top of the gear stick, should I be looking toward the bottom of the stick under the rubber boot?

    Removing manual gearbox gear knob

Thanks for the reply. I didn't spot one, I shall have a closer look - or get some glasses!

    Removing manual gearbox gear knob

I have decided to replace the rather tired gear shift gaiter in my manual P38 which requires removing the gear knob but how do I do this? The workshop manual doesn't explain, I assumed it would screw off but if this is the case it is extremely tight. TIA and Happy New Year

    Just a thought, EAS dessicant

Just to be sure... I had a quick look in the workshop manual and the section on removing the EAS drier doesn't mention having to de-pressurise the system first. Is it okay just to disconnect the air lines? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Goodey, another reason for tinkering with the old girl. ;)

My '96 P38 still has the original dryer, does this mean I ought to replace it?

    P38A Diesel cold start issue

Okay thanks. Cracking and bleeding session coming up

    P38A Diesel cold start issue

Thanks for the reply Wammers. As I had run the engine since changing the leak off pipes I assumed any air in the pipe would have been pumped into the engine and no longer be a problem. I didn't bleed the air out after changing the pipes so I'll do this as you suggest. Thanks for the glow plug...

    P38A Diesel cold start issue

Hi, Thanks for the replies. I finally got around to doing a bit of investigation... I connected a voltmeter +ve to glowplug terminal -ve to earth (engine block) and turned the ignition on and off and measured each glowplug. The rear 4 measured 10.5volts, the front 0volts and the next 5.5volts...

    P38A Diesel cold start issue

Hi, My P38A diesel has recently developed a problem of poor starting when cold I'd appreciate advice on. It seems to need at least two sessions on the glow plugs and several seconds (about 20+) cranking before it will fire up. Once started it's fine. I've replaced the leak off pipes but that...
