    Just a thought, is there fluid soaking into the carpet on the drivers side? That would suggest the seals have failed to the master cylinder.

    Sounds like seized callipers apart from the leak. An overhaul of the callipers would be a start to get the pistons moving followed by leak checks as previously discussed.

    200 Tdi's don't have them. They have universal spider joints both ends. I assume they were used in the 300's to reduce vibration.

    My money is on a broken CV joint. This is a common failure but broken half shafts come second. I would be interested in what the Land Rover workshop come up with.

    Have you checked the leak off pipes. Given the mileage I would suggest that might be the first place to start. These get brittle with age.

    The symptoms you describe suggest head gasket failure. Is the oil contaminated with water? Weighing up the costs, I would be inclined to take the head off and re-build including skimming the head. You should also lap in the valves whilst the head is off. The garage will charge at least 1 hours...

    So its lever operation or linkage. Maybe the transfer box but they are fairly robust. You did not confirm but I assume you can engage difflock.

    Have you checked the slave cylinder? These are often the cause of the problem. They are not expensive so a renewal may be the best course of action.

    As has been said before, cv joint is the most likely problem. If it is not a cv joint then half shaft or differential in that order. Rotate each front wheel and the one making grating sounds is the likely one.

    I would suggest you remove centre console and 12 pop rivets (5mm dia), remove lever housing and check lever for correct operation. It would be a good idea to clean and lubricate whilst you have it out. Next check linkage is operating correctly. Sounds like something is broken or has come loose...
