A new alternator has solved the problem. Lucas unit was only £38 + vat from mm 4x4.com.

Put on a new alternator, nice to see the little red charge light again!

I do believe my series III 1973 hardtop was £1300 new and worth about £1300 now. would you believe it?

Earthed the bulb wire and sure enough the warning light came on. I will now go down the faulty alternator route. Thanks every one. Don't suppose anyone know of a company that does an exchange service, don't fancy pulling it apart myself.

Ok. The bulb for the red warning light seems ok but it does not work. why I am not sure??? Was wondering if I may have dislodged a wire when re connecting the air hose behind the dash and on looking sure enough there is a loose wire which is purple with white. Can't see a purple with white on...

Not gone to bed! I drive my landy every day as it is my only vehicle, why can't I remember if the red charge light comes on as well as the green oil pressure light? Are you sure the red light is on with just the ignition?

Would I be right in saying that if the charge light is not on and the belt is turning the alternator but the battery is not charging, that it is a battery problem? Don't want to go out and buy a new battery if it could be something else.:confused: Cheers.

Easiest way to solve the fuel consumption is not to use it. Welcome.

Slept in many vehicles, mainly as I don't have a spare room for when I fall out with the Mrs. As my only vehicle the S3 88" is my only option. Bloody uncomfortable but thank god for bench seats!
